Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Edge 510 Issues

Anyone have problems with missing data on an Edge 510?

This evening for example everything on the display looked normal from the start, power, hr, speed, time. Finished the ride with right around 2 hrs showing when I stopped and saved. Downloaded it and on Strava and in WKO it shows a straight line from start to about where I was at 30 min on the map, with all data blank. Then normal data and map, and a 1:30 ride time.

This has happened twice in the last week. Unit is less than a year old and has been flawless to this point.

What kind of power meter do you have? I had endless problems with multiple Edge 510s and ultimately it was due to bad data being sent by my Stages power meters. Long story short, problem solved by switching to SRM power meters. I'll elaborate if you have a Stages.

Otherwise, do all the usual Garmin stuff: clear rides from history, update firmware. Lather rinse repeat.

Power2Max, I have not had even a single data point out of place with this meter, rock solid. My only complaint is that cadence lags a second or two (noticeable on the Track version). Even todays ride everything looked normal on the display. The data skips from 3:28 to 27:17.

A similar issue happened Sunday, at that time I cleared out all rides and did a firmware update.

No idea about Power2Max. But the Stages caused data issues with the Edge 510 because the ANT+ signal the Stages sends out is weak. Any disruption in the flow of data from the power meter could cause the 510 to freak out. Frequently it would lock up and fail to record data- not just power data but any data. The fundamental problem was in the quality of the data being sent to the Edge 510 but the response of the head unit to the bad data made things worse.

I troubleshot my problems for months with both Garmin & Stages. Three Edge 510 units and one Edge 1000. Dozens of cycles of replacing units, updating firmware, recording data with multiple head units simulataneously, upgrading from the 510 to 1000. Two Stages power meters, one refurbished by Stages once and the other twice. The only thing that solved my issues was replacing the power meters with SRMs. Then all the data issues stopped overnight.

If you've had the Power2Max for awhile & know it's not the power meter, I'd call Garmin. They will attempt to blow you off (theyll say it's the power meter) and good chance they'll tell you at least sone wrong stuff. But that's your next step beyond the firmware upgrade & clearing ride history.

If there's any troubleshooting to do with the power meter- firmware upgrade, replace battery, etc- do that too.

Good luck. There are a lot of weird Garmin glitches that seem to just go away on their own. You could hope for that too.

PS Most of my data issues were evident on the display during the ride. Rarely would the data seem ok during the ride and then be bad in the software. I upload data to Garmin connect, Strava and WKO+.

That's what's puzzling, everything on the display looks normal. Will see if Garmin support actually responds, email sent.

My experience was that calling Garmin was always fastest (but it still took a long time). The email replies seemed to take 3ish days. Garmin was always good about responding, just not so good about having any real idea about what was wrong.
