Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

One needs to understand hydration for you and what it feels like if you start to head towards a bonk just a little. Both are easily fixed, or prevented. Just practice. Use the computer or a watch to know when you need to drink. It's easy.
I wasn't drinking enough water so I downloaded a free app to my phone called "Plant Nanny". I put in how much I weigh, how active I am, and my gender and it calculated how much water I should drink. Then I set it to pop up an alert every two hours reminding me to drink. What gets you to drink though is every time you take a drink, you give one to the little plant as well and since you don't want it to die, you're more likely to keep up. Won't be a hook for everyone but it's worked for me for over a week except on Saturdays for some reason.

Yes. Because it isn't our property to be creating a garden-level Air B&B apartment in. If we own a house someday and you want to do that, go for it.

You better do some more research before you decide to move down there. I was raised in Wichita Falls, TX. Home of the Hotter N Hell Hundred AND winters with temperatures below 0. Wind chills in the minus double digits. Plenty of snow and ice. The wind is always blowing. In the summer it is a blast furnace wind. In the winter it is a freezing wind from the north. Did I mention tornadoes? You have to deal with those as well as the hail, etc. that comes with those super storms. Droughts, floods, you name it, it's all there. That's why Texans are hard to the core. They have to deal with that stuff day in and day out.

Ok, riding in California is amazing. Also, the 5800 on my rental BMC is lightyears better than the 5700 I'm used to. So slick, you might even say it shifts like buttah.

Doesn't make Pokemon Go look so stupid anymore now does it. For all the haters out there! I like the plant app, I naturally slam 32oz Nalgene's all the time while I'm at work so I probably drink 'too much' water, but I'm always thirsty.

It is stupid nice. I was talking about putting the DA9000 on the Crockett to replace the 5700, but that's really idiotic. I haven't ridden a 5800 bike, but have built quite a few of them out of the box and just shifting in the stand it feels as good as my DA 11 speed stuff. I could get all the 5800 stuff I need for about 350 bucks online. Then all I need is to build up a proper wheelset.

But yeah, I'd love to ride in Cali. I'll probably put it on my list of future bike-centric road trips, but I've already got a few of those in que for Colorado and New Mexico.

Just up and down the 101 from Encinitas, my brother (the groom) is a little sick so he didn't want to push it. Still, everyone is so friendly to cyclists, the infrastructure is so consistently good (marked lanes, share the road signs, ect), the weather is perfect, ect ect. If I lived here I'd never have an excuse not to ride!

Views like this would never get old-

Now I'm coffee'ing up for a solo ride around La Jolla.

Good times.
I love riding in San Diego.

If you head south in the morning to Old Town, grab some fresh homemade tortillas. The foil wrapped packs of 3 are perfect for jersey pockets.

Front shifting is much easier and more precise, rear shifting up and down feels more mechanical and consistent than 5700, brakes are better than what I'm running (Apex), drivetrain is virtually silent (though it's better maintained than my bike), the levers feel slightly better in-hand, ect. Easily worth whatever the current price of the full group is if your stuff wears out.

Did you see where I had to replace the pulleys on my 5700 RD? It couldn't have had more than 2K miles on it and the upper pulley had massive play. I could not get it tuned right. Even after replacing them and triple checking the hanger, it still hesitates going to a smaller cog on the right side of the cassette.

Ok, that does it. The Crockett is getting 5800 sometime this winter.

I doubt one would ever happen in Denton and the distance from Dallas or Fort Worth would probably negate the savings of a hotel room, but you're certainly welcome here any time.

I'm going to be out of town camping from the 11-14th. On the 10th we have our all office firm outing where we hit Lake Minnetonka for lunch on a tour boat and then it's happy hour. I could probably do something later that day or Monday, but not Tuesday (unless you wanted to join me for trivia and beer).

Dammit! Some reactionary idiot league official cancelled today's softball games last night, based only on the forecast of heavy rain overnight into this morning. Why not wait till the morning to see what will actually happen instead of jumping the gun?

Turns out the storm totally missed us to the south, as last night's radar clearly showed it doing at the time of cancellation. Now the sun is out, the fields are dry, and a bunch of makeup games have to get made up before the playoffs bearing down on us. Idiots!
