2012 SRAM crankset - how are the chainrings?
I'm building a mid-budget BB30 road bike and so have been looking at SRAM Force cranksets on Ebay. Someone is selling this one for a pretty good price, but I know that SRAM have completely changed the chainrings in the last few years. Were there any issues with this older style? I can get the newer style for a little more money in a little worse shape, but I'm not sure the value of that tradeoff. I don't care about the weight diff between the two (if there is one)

I agree with HOWSER -- had many sets over the years without issue. It's always hard to tell online, but the big ring in the photos you've attached seems decently shark-finned and likely at the end of its life. Luckily, replacements are inexpensive, but something to consider in your purchasing decision.

Also considering this dirtier, newer crankset
maybe less worn?

Yes; the second crank seems less worn overall, but more evenly worn between the rings. Meaning, in the first crank, the small ring looks new and the large ring looks shot, whereas on the second crank, both rings appear evenly worn, perhaps with 25%-50% of life left. I think you'd still have great shifts on the second set, just watch your chain stretch before you eat up a cassette unnecessarily.

Thanks for the advice - the second is around $100, might be worth it and then chainrings down the road.

Keep in mind BB30 Force 22 has a longer spindle than 2012 so it can fit Cervelo BBRight so needs a spacer on a 68 shell. Red 22 (or "etap" 2016) doesn't use the spacer.
