Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Lezyne Super gps yes or no

Lezyne Super Gps yes or no
Can't really afford a Garmin at the moment and after taking some time off the saddle I'm looking to get back into it so figured why not get me a cycling gps I can mount on my bike instead of using my phone all the time, do you lot know if I'll be able to sync my rides to strava from the Lezyne super gps or not.. is that a good decent unit?

Yeah, I think they still have a ways to go before their firmware is solid. Have you considered a Bryton unit? I went from a Garmin 500 to Bryton 530 and have been thoroughly satisfied.

"As you’ve figured out by now, Lezyne is doing some cool stuff on the software front. The Strava Live Segments, turn by turn navigation, and in particular that sweet insta-phone-navigation integration is quite competitive. Same goes for saving the battery by leveraging the accelerometer to minimize battery burn when not moving."

"However I think that Lezyne’s target market right now is really the commuting arena, at least with this model. It’s a perfect unit to toss on a bike for a cross town journey, and it has everything you’d need there. Of course, if looks don’t bother you, it’s quite capable in all conditions as well. But most of all, Lezyne appears to have nailed the software piece. And as any bike computer company can tell you – getting that piece right is often the hardest and takes the longest to truly perfect."

DC Rainmaker's comments about Lezynes "target market" being commuters was based on his opinion that the unit is ugly and that it would not look good on his pretty race bikes.
Of course, if looks don’t bother you, it’s quite capable in all conditions as well.
Keep in mind that the reviewer lives in some of the most desirable real estate in Paris, the Rue de Montebello on the River Seine right across from the Notre Dame Cathedral and that manufacturers fall all over themselves to hand him the best gear on the planet.

I've nothing against DC Rainmaker and looks do matter but I do think that comments like that above are a bit snobbish and somewhat condescending. In ten years of commuting I used the same gear, good or bad, for both Saturday group rides and commuting to and from work. Looking back, commutes were the the most enjoyable rides by far.

On re-read of my reply it came across snooty. Apologies for that.

I was intending to let you know that the Electronics forum had some post you might find useful if you had not checked there.

One of the things I've read is some of the Lezyne units don't seem to have all the features functioning that they claim are working. Best to do some research.

After using a Lezyne Y9 Super GPS for over a year my big three complaints are: lack of support (took over a year to release a software update to fix sensor pairing/discovery issues, limited to one paired sensor per type (nusiance if you want to use it on multiple bikes with different sensors), and lack of display customizability (better on the Y10, but nowhere near Edge 520/820). Fantastic battery life and never lost a second of ride data. I actually agree with DCR that it's a great computer to just stick on a bike and go. As a training computer, its limitations become more apparent.

I heard a lot of good things about the Super GPS but ended up with the Magellan Cyclo 315. The Super GPS had bluetooth but I didn't really care too much for that. The Magellan was cheaper and had a better maps feature. It's also color and the screen is beautiful and large. I also liked that I could integrate it with my di2.

I paid $140 for the kit including cadence and HR.

No.
Reason is the Garmin Connect is the most universal hub. Garmin provides mobile apps for Android, Apple, and Windows Phone (an example of their commitment). I expect there may be some apps that don't work with it but I don't know them. I can give non working examples for every other device.

The hardware - yawn.

The Polar V650 is an option.
It syncs with Stava and Training Peaks

Yes, the Magellan syncs with Strava manually through the PC. It doesn't have bluetooth so there is no auto sync through your phone. The Magellan logs support DI2 so you can see your gearing but Strava doesn't. So I look at both.

BlueTooth is a very useful feature.

My bikes are in my basement. The computer it would need to sync with is a flight up. With no BT it means every ride sees the device going to the laptop and cable syncing.

With my Garmin 810, it pairs to the Garmin app on my smartphone (carried on all rides), at the end of a ride I press Save on the Garmin and it dumps to the smartphone app and immediately to Garmin Connect, and immediately to Strava if I wanted.

Pretty painless. I'd verify that BT actually does what you want on the Lezyne.

On the Lezyne, I press save, and it is on Strava within seconds. It's very easy and fast.
