You joke, but this project is not well managed. The second series of 6 satellites has already had it's funding in the proposed budget. People blame the GOP for being anti-science, but really it's gov't being very inefficient and finally someone with a spine saying we're not going to reward this. Basically, it's been poorly managed, too many cooks in the kitchen, and nobody taking responsibility, so they were supposed to bid it to the commercial industry, and never did that. Congress is saying no, you can't have the $85 mil for the next six until you actually go to bid as required. I think a commercial entity taking over would have saved money in the beginning, but at this point maybe not. There's also a chicken and egg problem on that second series. Taiwan won't fund the satellites themselves until they know the US is going to fund the launch. The US won't fund the launch until they know Taiwan is going to fund the satellites. At this point we're just in this to make our customer's happy. We sell a lot of other systems some of these groups, and they are important to us. But this project is going to end well in the red due to spending so much time dealing with the project management issues. |

Ugh, MFin' kids these days.
I was cutting the grass, since it's supposed to rain all weekend, when a tennis ball comes whizzing over my shoulder and clunks in to the fence. Look across the street and there's a 8-10 young men strolling down the block, a couple of them clearly keeping an eye on me. I pick up the ball and start walking after them to have a little talk. They stroll along brazenly until I pick up my pace, at which time they break and run. I go back home and finish mowing the lawn. 45 minutes later, there's a flurry of pounding on my door. I look outside and see 3 or 4 kids crossing back over the busy street. Put my shoes on to go have a talk with them. All but one runs before I'm out the door. The last guy, 6' tall, saunters along with a baseball bat in hand, occasionally looking back to check on me. I go talk with him. He turns, points the bat at me and tells me to stay back. "Gimme a ****ing break - what the hell is wrong with you and your friends? Got nothing better to do than try to assault and harass someone mowing the lawn?" "Wasn't me, blah, blah" "No, of course not - you know who it was, though. So, who was it?" "I'm not going to rat them out blah, blah, blah. I came back to talk to you to smooth things over, blah, blah, blah" "By pounding the **** out of my door and pointing a bat at me? Fine, you can tell the police." "Wait - you're really calling the police?" "Would you rather the alternative?" After waiting for an incredibly long time, 20 minutes or so, the police come and give the kid the easy way or the hard way choice. He chooses the easy way and rats out all his friends. One cop, while talking to the kid, gives me a free pass, "you know - you made some dumb choices and you're lucky. I look at you, you're taller than me, and you're just as tall as him [gesturing to me]. Most people aren't going to look at you and think, 'hmmmm - he's about 16.' Nope, they're going to look at you, assume you're a college kid and think, 'man-on-man' and they're gonna give it to you, 'specially if you're pointing a bat at them. You're lucky this guy doesn't have a temper." Damn kids. |

"Yeah." "Really? You know, I moved from NYC to this specific neighborhood so that my kid could go to Southwest, because we'd heard that it was such a great school." "Oh yeah - it is. Awesome school." "Not lookin' so awesome to me right now, kid." |

Well, they're $150,000 each, and there are 2 of them on site for this project...

Yup. It was that or take his chances of getting away from me. That wouldn't have gone over well. As it was I chatted with him. "Where do you go to school - Southwest?"

There is no doubt the man is awesome. Mainly because he doesn't seem to take himself too seriously. He seems to put the fun back into cycling. You just can't help love the bugger.

Of course, the reason I am posting more often here in the past couple of days is that I am at home looking after Machka after some hospital surgery. Nothing too major, hopefully; more like warding off something worse.
It's a rest weekend for us... which is great because I can catch up on some home chores that deperately need doing. |

Serious question: they make men's clothing?
https://shop.lululemon.com/p/men-sho...t/_/prod990060 Outrageously comfortable and breathable in the Texas heat. Zippered pocket for car keys and wallet. Just keep a stock of six or so on hand. The horribly-named T.H.E. short is good as well, with a spandex liner. Have a few of those. |

I don't know. I'm just not a consistent rider at all due to my heart. I have really good days, and really bad days, and I never know what its going to be at any given time. I could probably go just as fast on bad days, but it's just too risky for me, so I do a lot of that "resting while pedalling" crap.
You have to play with the cards you're dealt. Do the best you can, find the silver lining in your situation, and enjoy it for all it's worth. |

Pepe White pedals aren't my thing, but it is before Labor Day, so you may be able to get away with it. |
