Had a successful afternoon in the bike garage. Got the replacement crank, chainrings and BB on my expedition/commuting bike. adjusted teh front deraileur to shift nicely with the new setup. Biked (on a different bike) to my LBS to buy some pedals. fitted those so that bike is ready to ride now.
Then did some adjusting on a different commuting bike and got it working nicely again. |

I understand being relieved at having the cash in case of emergency, but personally I would still get more at the airport ATMs. There is no problem to find them unlike sometimes in the city. Sure they are common in the cities but not always so convenient to locate. And the exchange rate comes from your bank, so it is always the best you can do.

Agree and my PLAN is to do that. But if there are lines at ATM in airport and kids are cranky, it's good to know we can bypass if needed.

I hope that it rains today so that I can go on a ride.

I think now I understand why some people are apprehensive about group rides. That bunch was rowdy! So much shouting. 'Car back! car back! car back!' I get it mate, we're on a public road. Zero order too. Lots of 'fighting for position' and 'attacks' that gained like two bike lengths before being brought back by the barely perceptible acceleration of the pack. 'Car up!' Someone passes you on the right side. 'Left turn!' Same person is now dropping like a rock. Still good fun, mind, plus a few people commented that they like my bike. :)
I'll make sure not to forget my mini pump from now on.

So a thought experiment:
You are a woman new to cycling and because of your physiology (rather than the lack of a mini pump) that level of group ride is all you can aspire to, maybe forever or at least for years. How likely do you think it is that you'll ever be exposed to anyone who races or ever learn anything much about it? You might instead gravitate to triathalon instead or maybe running or century riding. Then have to listen to men pontificate on BF about how women don't race bikes because they're "not competitive" or "just want a participation sport". I know I'm preaching to the converted here but sometimes it's easier to really wrap your head around someone else's paradigm when someone points out a specific example. of potentially awkward and/or frustrating dates- er, rides - before finding one that I'm happy with. On my rides, I'll ask competent-looking (but not too fast/serious - don't wanna be yelled at!) groups about who they are, but they're few and far between. Of the last couple, one was a collegiate team (so much for that) and I received a bit of a chilly reception from the other (get over yourself - I'm 190 and was easily out-climbing half of your group). In a funny twist, some of the rides that I've come across that looked like they'd be really fun/interesting were groups of serious, but not too serious, women. "Hi! I'm totally not a creeper - can I ride with you?" :o |

Drat. I guess if you cycle long enough, everything will happen. Front flat on the return leg this morning with about 4 miles to go. Reached back for my tool kit and, whoops, fogot it. First time I have forgotten it and needed it. Called home but no answer. Mrs. rpen was reveling in the industrial noise of vacuuming so she didn't hear the phone. Thanks, Uber.
I know, I know. Bike stuff goes on the bike and personal stuff goes on me. Not gonna happen. |

Instead of doing anything useful today I'm going to watch this on a loop.

The two international trips we've done in the past two years have included bonus babies and toddlers on the flights. And I do have to say, their behaviour was exemplary. On this latest one, there was one kid that was a bit ansty, but out of the five on the plane under the age of 18 months, that's a pretty good score... and he wasn't near us anyway.

I like it when a plan comes off, even if there are a few little frustrations along the way.
We are somewhat addicted to our phones for internet connection at home. Messaging and checking mail, and seeing what's happening in the world (Machka has Facebook, but I just rely on BFs and news.com). We've used laptops when travelling to North America before, and just picked up internet connections where we could -- at her parents' place, or hotspots, or paid/free within accommodation houses. This time, I bought two SIM cards for AT&T before we left Australia; they were promoted as providing coverage in Mexico and Canada. I connected up yesterday. There were a few minor hiccups along the way, but otherwise the connections all work. And even better, they allow tethering, so we can connect the notebooks to the internet whenever there is coverage. The AT&T signal here goes through Rogers. Our usage at home is relatively small, so the 6GB we have bought for each SIM should do us for the month we are here. Most importantly, of course, I was sweating on the phones working so we could access Strava directly, rather than through any other devices (I have two back-up computers that record and transfer later to Strava, but their battery life if relatively short, and they don't record while recharging). So I can breathe a big sigh of relief there. |

Regarding kids and planes, my wife and I were on a hopper from Madrid, Spain to Palma, Mallorca and there was an 8 year old behind us running a non-stop commentary on the flight. He was actually cuter than crap and had everyone laughing. My wife and I turned around and said something like "having fun?" or similar and the little boy replied in Spanish. The mother looks at him and says he should be polite and answer us in English since we were American. Immediately, this 8 year old starts rambling on in very passable English and occasionally Spanish.
One of the best flights that we ever had. This was in 2001 and I can still the cute little booger's face plain as day. :D |
