Speedplay vs. other pedals

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

can you clip in when the pedal is "flipped" like spd or speedplay?

how much of a problem are hotspots with speedplay??

As to Hotspots, people's opinions seem to vary. It appears that a significant minority of people have some issues with hotspots. Personally, I've never had a problem. IMHO, any hotspot issue is more the shoe than the pedal, and as long as you have a proper fitting, stiff soled shoe, you shouldn't have trouble with hotspots using speedplay pedals.

I watched them start a forest fire once.

I also had my ACL, Meniscus, and MCL repaired and the speedplays were by far the most comfortable pedal set. Pedals without anytype of float might cause you pain. At least, they did with me.

Not to mention that the cost of replacing the plastic Look cleats at $15 a pair x 2 times a year or so, adds up to the price of X2 Speedplays in a short time. Have used X2s for 8 years now and like them. It takes a little time to be sure that the cleat on the bottom of the shoe is good and centered over the ball of your foot to give the feeling of a stable platform.

I've been tossing around the idea of going to Speedplays. Currently using Look Keo Classic's now and I like them. Just wondering if Speedplay's wouldn't be better on my knees.

When it comes to weight, do you guys really worry about 30 grams? That is 2/3 of an ounce. You could save more weight than that if you get a haircut before a race. I am not laughing at this, I am kind of impressed if any of you actually watch component weight that seriously, unless you are actually a paid pro rider.

i am looking at switching to zeros mostly cuz despite a couple of years in keos, i still dont find clipping into them to be as second nature as i'd like and its nerve wracking EVERY SINGLE TIME i line up at a crit. and i'd say 1 in 3 or 4 times i miss on my first revolution and it messes up my race. theyre fine other than that, but its a real nuissance.

on the issue of float, i used to ride only spd and have always had knee problems but once i switched to no float, and spent a while tweaking the position, my knees have been great.

That's my issue with Look's as well. When crossing a street or getting started at all, I'm constantly looking for the cleat and looking down, which is something I need to work on regardless, but still.

Odd how you said you went to no float and your knees faired well. I've always heard the opposite.

Light actions are similar to X-series in that they have fixed float, but the cleat design is more like zero, and they are easier to get in and out of. So there is no such thing as "the speedplay pedal", and there aren't really any blanket statements that you can make...
QFT. If too much float is an issue, get the damn Zeros. I hate the 15* float that they have but a few turns of the screw and I'm now exactly where I want them to be. It's not like the Shimano 105's I used to run where I had to remove the cleats to get the right positioning. I just installed them, borrowed a trainer, and adjusted them on the bike to center the float as I needed.
