That was a first, broke a cleat yesterday
Yup...Broke an spd-sl cleat yesterday.
It came apart on the inside walking point on the left. All three bolts managed to hold, but it was a strange 14mi ride home trying not to clip out.
It was time to replace them anyway, at least I didn't have to call the spousal sag wagon.

That's not too bad. Try breaking a pedal axle quarter way into the morning commute. Then having to pedal with the single leg again on the return trip.
Also scratched the hell out of the shoe on the broken axle side. Was using the nub to rest my foot on, but its easy to slip as you would guess. Yeay.
I should mention that if you need to walk on your cleats daily (even if its a litle bit), then you probably should be carrying and using cleat covers. Having said that, I have yet to follow my own advice...

I try to avoid walking on them as much as possible, knowing it's not good to get past the walking pads. Like I said, it was time anyway.
I'd be veerry unhappy if I broke a pedal axle.

broke the sole of shimano MTB shoe straight across the widest part of the foot once, i'm so cheap, i think i rode with them like that for a year or two.
they had survived at least 20,000 miles of touring/commuting and countless miles of walking, with an occasional hike, so not surprising, i guess.

You need cleat covers. And I'll show you what kind of guy I am. I found these laying in the road during a ride a few weeks ago. I think they're for the SPD-Sl cleat. Send me your address in pvt message and I'll sent them to ya.

Cleats do wear and break. Basic fact of life, made worse if you walk on them a lot.
Not a big deal, and you can usually still ride because it's usually the back that breaks, and you can still locate the foot via the front end. Years ago, I broke a Look cleat, and other than knowing it, the difference was barely noticeable, except when climbing.
