what do you do for upper body workout?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bicep curls bore me. I prefer preacher curls, but I don't have the machine for that one

I ride a 23 lb. bike -- no weight weenie here. And I gotta put in some gym time if I want Jessica Biel's arms and abs.

Anyhoo...here's a link to some comments by Carmichael on strength training. May be useful to some...

https://www.roadcycling.com/news/article915.shtml
He's got a point that if you have time on your hands and have to choose between bike and gym, bike should win every time. But if, say, you're bored on your lunch hour and can pop into a nearby gym for 30-45 minutes, I don't think it hurts and it could help.

I've personally noticed some fairly significant strength gains from 1 hour of weights per week in addition to, not replacing, 12-14 hours on the bike.

Have you ever checked out Krista Scott Dixon's site: https://www.stumptuous.com/weights.html ?
Awesome women's-specific weight training info.

BTW, when you get the Jessica Biel arms & abs - feel free to post jpegs

Yes, Krista's site was hard for me to get my teeth into when I first had it recommended about a year ago, but with the intervening year of weight training under my belt, I LOVE that site! It really inspires me to hit those free weights.

I'm getting darned buff, but I'm afraid these white limbs will never photograph well. Feel free to google Jessica though.

I hit the gym twice a week and swim 4 miles a week. Definitely not bulking up, but way more toned. Seems to me the guys I see that never do any other training other than riding always have a little Ulrich belly. I know everyone's going to take great offense and point to all of these anecdotal accounts of cyclists in fabulous shape who never do any other training. But what's the point of being some uber cyclist if you can't even run or swim a mile, or worse risk injury playing ball with your kids. In my opinioin, fitness is about well-rounded fitness. I'd be willing to bet that most pros hit the gym or some other sort of cross training.

Right on! Even Lance hits the gym, at least during the off season, you can tell he's well rounded, enough to look at his upper body and arms.

An easy exercise that won't add much bulk but will tone up what's there and have huge strength benefits is the simple, boring, pull-up.
By reversing your grip, changing hand positions wide/narrow, you can hit your entire upper body, upper back, arms and hands. Adding lower body crunches/leg lifts to the pull up works your core.
I do about 200 of em a day in sets of 20-35 and my wife constantly makes lecherous comments on my arms. abs, chest and back. Then again, that is part of her job as a wife.

Some of you are doing more upper body (esp. chest) work than I do...and I'm training for a powerlifting meet! (I bike to help make weight)

In addition to being a lycra wearing roadie, I wrestle. Mucho upper body strength needed to perform some of those holds effectively.

Since you will be in full OCP Team poseur kit I assume and leaning on Trinity you probably have no problem getting the fight started. My only concern is what do you do with the bike during the fisticuffs?
