What is Garmin really measuring when they give you a VO2 Max number?

Sounds like it's based strictly on heart rate, see https://www.firstbeat.com/app/upload...1-11-20142.pdf & https://www.firstbeat.com/app/upload...estimation.pdf. Wish they add the option for power, VO2 (L/min) = 0.0108 x power (W) + 0.007 x body mass (kg). I get my estimate from Golden Cheetah.

- At least 10 or 20 (?) minutes of ride time (?)
- Pace data (not sure if a foot pod works or if it has to be outside with GPS)
- HR data
- At least 10 minutes of run time
Also for either sport, it needs to know your weight and max HR to get in the right ballpark.

I don't think this is true, because in order for your Garmin to give you a VO2max estimate on a bike, you need:
If you ride with a chest strap and no power meter, it won't give you a score.
Also for either sport, it needs to know your weight and max HR to get in the right ballpark.

I did a metric century with my wife, and was non-stop Z1 all day. My recovery advisor time was 5 hours.
I guess I just have so many rides in, with HRM data on every single one of them, that it's dead-on 12 minutes. Some days I like to race the Recovery Advisor, and see how far I can get in that first 12 minutes. It's wildly counterproductive.

The recovery adviser works well for me. I get many different recovery times as well as too many "fair" and some "poor" that are usually pretty accurate. As stated before, if I fee bad, and get a "good" I've pushed through to have a good ride when I may not have otherwise. I can push through "fair" with some results, but "poor" is going to be a tough ride. I've had it recommend days for recovery.
My VO2 fluctuates. You can view your history in Garmin connect. I've never had it go "up" without a really tough group ride that I did pretty well in. No "fancy" numbers here. After winter I will start spring around 40 last two years I've hit 42, this year I hit 43 and this week I hit 44 for the first time ever. For my age, I'm nothing special according to the chart. It goes up and down a point or two throughout the season, measuring all my rides and recording when it drops or rises.
Garmin will also measure your FTP on it's own, but only when it goes up. You can of course do an FTP test anytime you wish.
