Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

2010 Zipp 404 Alloy/Carbon Clincher - fair value?

Looking for some opinions.

I can usually get a fairly good grasp on bike frame/part value by looking at comparable items for sale on ebay/craigslist/pinkbike/etc.

However, I'm having a nightmare of a time finding comps to a wheelset I'm looking into.

It's an older model 2010 set of Zipp 404s (NOT firecrests.) Its one of the last years they made them with an aluminum brake track bonded to carbon. They have a 10 speed hub, and it is not 11 speed compatible, would need a new hub and full rebuild to make them so. (that's ok for my purposes, I want them for a 10 speed build, but I figure it affects value.)

Firecrests 2012 and after are easy to find. These however, are not. I would assume they have a much lower value than all carbon firecrests, especially considering the hub issue.

The only pair on ebay has a powertap hub, and is on offer for 700. These don't have the powertap.

I was thinking maybe somewhere in the 400-500 range, but that's based on a couple I found on an Austrailian site, not a US site.

Am I too high? Too low? In the ballpark? Trying to come up with an offer that isn't insulting to the seller, but is also fair to my pocketbook.

Assuming they are in good shape, I think your numbers are fair.

keep an eye on the front hub on any of the older Zipp Wheels, go to the Zipp website for the recalled hub details. I still see wheels with the recalled hubs coming up on Ebay.

If you can spring the extra cash try to get a pair firecrest they are so much stiffer.

My first thought was $400, tops.

They are 10 speed wheels, and heavy.

Yeah, that's close enough. Mine weigh 1570 grams. But, I see a lot of full carbon clinchers just barley under 1500 grams with most over 1500. So, is it worth spending $$ just to save less than 100 grams for a nice set of 50mm carbon clinchers as opposed to the 404s with alloy brake tracks?
FYI: I have both, 2010 Zipp 404 and a set of 2017 China Bomb 50mm full carbon clinchers that I built up to 1475 grams from FarSports.

For $500 you are probably better off with a used set of Bontrager Aura 5 TLR's

We have a result. I have acquired them for $300. They are in pristine shape, have less than 2000 miles. They will look awesome on my classic 90s steel serotta build. Thanks everyone.
