Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Frame

Looking for a ride all day bike with less vibration.

1. Specialized Fact 9r Carbon vs. 500 OCLV Carbon.

Thanks Duane

Frame material is far from the only factor. Both the Roubaix and the Domane would be good options, though, if those were the two specific bikes that you were looking at.

Also, the ability to mount larger tires (28mm? 32mm?) will help with vibration, as long as one is using high quality tires.

Funny. BITD all bikes were ride-all-day bikes. 19 or 21 mm tires inflated to 110-120 lb. Thin chamois in the shorts. No padding. I can't remember anyone ever complaining. I wonder what happened. Buncha wusses.

Thanks Duane

SLX steel frame & fork with 28mm Veloflex tubulars.
Here's an example without the Veloflex.

When the narrow-tire fad hit hard in the late 80s, foam synthetic chamois were becoming a thing, and padded saddles were already well-established.

In the long heyday of leather saddles and zero padding, it was pretty normal for road bikes to come with 25mm tires or larger.

I don’t remember it that way. Unpadded chamois were still the rule with the narrow tires. Bike comfort has always been about technique, not padding.

This^^^^^. The secret to a good all day ride is a steel-frame bike. I still ride my '84 Peugeot. It's steel and I can ride it all day without discomfort. Did I mention it's my one and only bike?? Did I mention I am the original owner??
