Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Anyone live near Washington, NC?

I'll be in Washington, NC next week Monday-Thursday for a business trip. At least on Monday afternoon I think I'll have time to fit a ride in (driving down and bringing my road bike). Any good rides in the area? Looking at Google maps, it looks pretty rural and surrounded by water so it can't be too bad. Any roads to stay away from? Worst case, I'll just ride and bring a map.

Thanks, but wrong Washington. I'm looking for info on Washington, North Carolina (a small town near the coast right on the Pamlico (sp?) Bay).

There used to be a bike shop in Washinton, NC, but I can't find it in google. They once hosted a century ride that I did. It went from Washington to Chocwinity to Aurora taking the ferry over to Bath (Blackbeard's homeport) then backroads back to Washington as I recall. You may be able to figure out a route on your own using mapquest or something.

Anyway, while in the area visit Belhaven Memorial Museum if you like the weird and strange. It's in nearby Belhaven, NC.

Interesting museum, along the lines of the Mutter Museum in Philadelphia.

Any comments on what it's like to ride on 264? I'm now wishing I had a full day there to ride. Looking at the roads, I could ride along the Pamlico Bay for 50 miles then head north along the ocean for a while then come back along the Albermarle Sound. Looks like a nice 100-125 mile ride if I was allowed over the bridges. Hmmm, I wonder if I could drive down Sunday instead?

Arrgh, Matey! That's Blackbeard country!

I've never cycled the area but I have surfed it. Killer waves!

If I were you, I'd haul the bike over to the Outer Banks and ride Highway 12. You'll get some awesome views of the Atlantic, plus some great sightseeing such as the Cape Hatteras lighthouse and Kill Devil Hills/Kitty Hawk/Wright Bros. historic site, etc.

I hope you like wind.

If I had all day, I'd plan a big ride that would hopefully include some riding in the Outer Banks but I'll probably only have time for a 2-3 hour ride (unless I bring my lights but unfamiliar roads and darkness isn't exactly appealing to me having been lost before). I guess I'll see what I can see and maybe get lucky enough to have the better part of the day for ride and get close to the Atlantic. As long as the wind is behind me, I don't mind it.

Sorry, it was so long ago I don't remember much about the traffic or road conditions.
