Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The worst ice I have ever seen. Full blast on the defroster. The car started getting ice on the windshield the wipers could not remove . Got a robo pone call from the town, they basically said every street in town is black ice, and to stay off the road. The only way to get around tomorrow is my studded tire bike. Oh wait....the cars don't have studs, never mind.

Indeed. The refs have been horrible this entire playoffs season.

Lacing an eight pound hub motor into a wheel is no fun.

That is all.

@datlas would approve of this vegetarian mashup of Italian eggplant, chickpeas made with, inter alia , ground sumac and pomegranate molasses.

Want. On Saturday Hannah wanted one last fun meal before back to college. We got Naf-Naf and I had the vegan bowl. It was pretty good but yours looks better.

Have a set of 32-hole DA16s on my old commuter—now rain—bike. They seem indestructible, but I am light and ride light.

I meant to ask this earlier, but how many kg's are you? I remember you being fairly light. I'm realizing how much being heavy sucks in real life and in zwift. Sitting at 110 kg's so my 2 watts per kg is far outside of my current approximate FTP of ~170. After doing the climbing route on Saturday, I think I could tell that 170 was fairly accurate, so I should probably commit to one of the FTP builder training programs. The weight will come off slowly as I ride more and eat less crap. I was as low as 95 kg last time I was really riding. Shooting for 85-90 in the long term.

I do have a weight weenie body. Currently at around 65Kg. I expect you will be able to improve your power with more training, if that's your goal.

p.s. I don't do any FTP tests but Zwift calculates one's FTP just based on your efforts, and mine is 180 which works out to 2.76 W/Kg. I suspect that is weak for a "serious" race-oriented cyclist but respectable for an enthusiast like me.

In real (as opposed to fake) cycling news, I think I'm ready to finally ditch the 105 5700 groupset on the Crockett. After replacing the rear derailleur pulleys, straightening the hanger, and even finally upgrading the wheels because the shaft was slightly bent on the old set, it STILL gives me fits while shifting. I've never been 100% happy with it on the bike and it's the one I grab for outdoor rides because I'm in love with the 32mm Panaracer Paselas on it. I might pick up the scraps of available 5800 deals or shoot straight for the R7000 stuff. The Dura Ace 9000 on the Domane is flawless, so I'm inclined to pick up the 5800 if I can find it, but still entertaining the R7000 stuff.

My goal is both, but I have a feeling loosing weight over the next 6-12 months is easier than adding a significant amount to that FTP. I guess we'll see. I'd like to pick one of the programs, but it would mean committing to a solid 5 days a week and my schedule is subject to change for work travel. Better to just start one and see what happens.

The R7000 looks fantastic. Up until the holidays you could get screaming deals from the UK sellers, but I believe Shimano put an end to that. Still probably worth paying an extra ben or two for it.

You will likely be able to do both, providing you can get on the bike on a regular basis. Since you haven't been on it a whole lot, your ftp is subject to change in a pretty positive way. Dropping weight never, ever hurts.

True. In addition to being off the bike and being heavy, this is also my first experience with measured power. My most recent peak was when I was doing maybe 150-200 miles a week and was down to 210 pounds (95 kgs even with a crap diet) but that was about 5 or 6 years ago. I was at 210 again maybe 2-ish years ago before more family tragedy struck to derail my discipline, but I wasn't riding as much. So I really do wonder how I would heave measured up back then.

That's great. You bring up a good point though. I should dig back into core exercises for days I don't get on the bike. I'm shooting for 4-5 bike days a week. Being in NY for 5 days didn't help, but I did get one ride in.
