I saw my hospital doctor again today for a regular check. Things continue improving, but she has written another certificate for another month off work -- which has several reasons that aren't quite as bad as they used to be, but need a little careful healing time..
And it might also mean I can get my driver's licence back. Under the law here, anyone who suffers a serious brain injury in a non-driving incident, has to hand in their licence until medically cleared -- which is happening now with psycho and doctor OKs, and an eyesight one at the end of January.
There are still some seemingly unsolvable issues with my left foot and leg, and we shall see how the next year goes with the medical opinion of a neurologist that self-healing is the likely way to go. Bicycle riding sure does help, along with walking and a tiny bit of running..
I also have some further work to do on a head and neck issue with a physical exercise person who has brain issues as a specialist area..

No, I don't think so. Brain injuries aren't that rare, I think, but the handing in of the licence exists for medical assessment of any brain damage, irrespective of how it was caused.
Oddly, it doesn't particularly affect the right to cycling on the road. But I was imposed a temporary discouragement fairly soon after I was out of hospital. I still have great cautions when riding on the road among the car and truck drivers, hence the reason for our use lately of roads we already trust. And bike paths away from peak periods.

He and his business partner just bought the truck in Oct and had it inspected. Apparently there was some front-end work done...

Much luck was involved here. That was about 10 minutes of effort, and we had clear skies and like 34 degree weather. It was so damn dim I had to do longer exposures than I'd expected, and there's a loss of sharpness and added noise because of that. Next time I'll be better prepared.
Obligatory shot of the tired kid and wife:
My youngest had already fallen asleep by the time totality rolled around.
Still, pretty good for a completely unprepared shot on a whim. Big-ass telescope helps. But this picture is nowhere near the capabilities of that thing.

Morning! Another cold morning in a week of cold mornings. No complaints here. The end is near. I got a new sleeping bag a few weeks ago, and am now snug and warm through the cold winter nights. Life is good on all fronts.

Heh. When I was in college, the faculty member who ran my college house was a law professor who specialized in entertainment/sports law. At one point he was representing/counseling Lucas on some matter. Lucas came to visit one evening. I was hanging out in the dorm lobby when he walked through after leaving the professor's digs. Imposing looking guy. Lucas, as you probably know, was on the -'76-'77 championship team that beat the Sixers 4-2 after losing the first two games in Philly. It was heartbreaking. Lloyd Free (later World B. Free) was on that losing team.

I ordered the Alex rims last evening, and will lace them to Sunshine high flange hubs, and custom fit them to the 124mm dropouts of the Trek. I have a 5, or 6 speed corncob which will complete the set beautifully. It's been awhile since the last wheel build, and this will be the first with brand new rims. Looking forward to it.

Semi-quantitative rating system for winter bicycle commuting
> 20º F Recreational
10º - 20º F Industrial
< 10º F Tactical
Subtract 5º for every 8 kts of breeze. All commutes over more than .1 mi. of hard-frozen mess are tactical.

I think that would be cool. Old ones would be really cool. The height of my NBA fandom came in the late 70s through the late 80s. I love seeing footage and photos from that time. I especially like seeing the cut of the uniforms back then.

Vain, But Lacking Talent
So I think I might have a problem. I was looking at some of the FTP workouts and realized that they often spec X amount of rpm for x minutes at x percent FTP. I suddenly realized how little I pedal at anything over 85 rpm. I have always settled in around 80. Last night I did a flat course and just tried to do 110 rpm for a while and it kind of sucked. I can do it, but only in short bursts for 3-5 seconds maybe? I eventually settled in and focused on maintaining about 90 rpm and that went well enough.
However, more disconcerting is that I don't think my left leg is fully functional. If you recall, I had an ACL replacement about 4.5 years ago and my recovery was always mixed with family stuff coming up. As of now, toying around with single leg drills, my left leg does not want to come over the top. There is the common clunk if your pedal stroke isn't smooth, but I'm actually experiencing a sensation where my leg does NOT want to go up and over the top of the stroke. I'm thinking I need to do some hip flexor exercises I learned from PT back in the day. I would appreciate any other input.
