Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I anticipate snow on Tuesday. I have made no preparations.
Didn't even unpack the snowsuit?

Then rode out in the green green hills. With a view of the offshore islands of Channel Islands NP. Perfect day.

The snowsuit is unpacked but I shall not be riding on Arctic days unless I start taking more dog drugs. I haven't even been riding on tolerable days because my knees are puffy.

Minneapolis schools was quick on the trigger - no school tomorrow. If not for the fact that I'll need coffee beans some time tomorrow, I wouldn't have to leave the house.

I used to make fun of those "snowbirds" who would head south for the winter.

Maybe not such a bad idea.

Upon waking up, it's really not bad out. We're at maybe 4" of the that light, almost sand-like snow and it's 2°. The updated forecast for Wed shows a high of -16°, though. I wouldn't mind if they were to close school that day.

If you've got the time and the resources...

My in-laws would be better off as snowbirds, I think. The ol' man kvetches about how cold it is in the MN winters and how he'd be stuck inside. Meanwhile, in VA, they avoid going out all summer, because of the heat and humidity, and don't really take advantage of the milder winters, anyway.

We did it last winter but my wife’s injuries/doc appointments have kept us home this year. We moved stuff around to get a 3 week window so I could get her out of here. Don’t mind the snow but the sub-zero stuff is hard to take. I hope it’s gone by the time we get back.

I'm sure some of you think Facebook is a waste of time, and to some extent it is. But yesterday I was reminded by an old college dorm mate of the night I met Calvert DeForest, a/k/a Larry "Bud" Melman, at a beer/sandwich shop across the street form our dorm. I had totally forgotten about that night. But I do remember telling Joan Rivers that I was a huge fan of hers while walking to a Penn football game. She responded "Oh thank you! Thank you!" in that rasp of hers. Her daughter Melissa had just started school there.

Those things are cute, but also pests at times. When we were in Waterton Village, AB, there were so many holes in the towne campsite that you really had to take care not to step in one and twist you ankle, especially after dark. It was so cold that we slept inside one of the camp kitchen buildings. One had burrowed a tunnel into the building. We had to plug it up with a tree branch to keep it out. In the backcountry campgrounds in Glacier N.P. they dig holes in the food prep areas to pop out and scavenge the scraps of food that invariably ends up on the ground. They are smart little critters.

Looks like life is going to get extra hard up north. I dodged most of the really bad stuff for my NY visit. I think the weekend after I visited they got a heap of snow and super cold temps. It was sunny and right around freezing the whole time I was there. Part of me wants to live in the Northeast, harsh winters and all. However, my wife can not stand the cold.

In cycling news, all the fake miles are paying off. I got out for a 28 mile ride yesterday and felt the best on a road ride than I've felt in probably 3 years. Being able to do 40 minutes to an hour about 3 to 4 times during the week (and Zwift helps by making it suck less) means I can actually maintain any gains. It's only been a month since I've had the smart trainer and it's seriously the best money I've spent on cycling in ages.

Yes. They don't live in the ground, though.

On more than one occasion I tried rescuing trapped chipmunks from Whiskers during his friskier days. Ultimately not all of them survived.

Wow. Ours do and they’re a royal pain in the rear end. They undermine concrete, underground utility boxes, etc.

Speaking of FB, mine seems to get stuck in time occasionally. This morning, the most recent posts were from two days ago and that was consistent in my feed. I changed the news setting to 'most recent' and it still gave me only stuff from Saturday. This seems to happen from time to time. A glitch in the time continuum, I guess.
