Welp, this is the season I've been saving up all those Kindle books for. I'm sure there will be an adjustment period. Learning to ride before 10 AM or after 5PM, and learning to put down the computer and read through the afternoon.

So...Today I went on a field trip to Greenville Yard in Jersey City to see how the revitalization of the car float and other operations are going. I spent so much time drafting the construction, operating and maintenance agreement for the project it was nice to finally see some of the results.
It's one of only 3 remaining car float operations in existence in the U.S. I this case, rail cars are floated on barges between Jersey City and Brooklyn for further movement. The barge holds 14 cars and is some 70 years old. The float bridge goes up and down to account for tides. A new, hydraulic bridge is being built right next to it, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, whose subsidiary runs the operation, has two new barges moored just off the end of the yard. They will hold 18 cars each.
Currently operating 3 round trips/day. The tug operator, which is an independent contractor, charges $500/hr.

Just googled it, doesn't sound pleasant.
I remember going there with my dad as a kid, he was a big train buff.

Nice. I haven't seen an SW unit in quite some time, those things used to be all over the place.

A bridge across Newark Bay to Brooklyn ? It would have to be 3+ miles and have a pretty large drawspan.
The Port Authority is actually exploring the idea of a tunnel. The agency is a behemoth. It's 2017 operating revenue was over 5,000,000,000. It's "Net Position" was over 17,000,000,000.

No worries. Interesting bit of trivia about the DL&W: At some point is had created for itself a fictional mascot named Phoebe Snow, marketed passenger service. Virginal character in a white dress which stayed clean because of the low soot anthracite coal the locomotives burned. Her career ended in WWI when the U.S. government prohibited railroads from using the anthracite they hauled to fuel their locomotives because it was desperately needed for the war effort. The late Phoebe Ann Laub, who was originally from Teaneck, NJ, took the stage name Phoebe Snow, after the character.
