Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Velonews

For those of you who subscribe or who have read it recently, I would like your opinions on the magazine. I've been looking for a quality biking magazine that goes beyond just pro racing, adding some talk about tech/maintenance stuff, racing techniques, and maybe even a little gear review. I know velonews deals a lot with pro racing, but I was wondering if it goes much beyond that into other areas of cycling interest.

Thanks, and if you guys have any better suggestions for a quality cycling magazine that incorporates all of the above criteria, let me know about it.

Been a subscriber for several years. I'd say Velonews is pretty much focussed on pro racing. They do have a column on training and a small amount of gear review, but (other than the annual equipment issue), not much. Alternatives might be Asphalt, but they haven't published an issue in a while so I'm not sure if they're still in business.

If you can read French and are willing to pay extra postage, there are some awesome French cycling magazines.

I would say it is around 85% racing coverage with the remaining percentage health and training and a very small amount of equipment and technical articles.

I subscribe to it specifically for the race coverage.

Actually, a good technical cycling magazine is Dirt Rag yet that is geared more towards mountain bikers and cyclocross riders.

Other than racing everything you list above is lacking from VN. Their coverage of tech, technique and gear is very light. You can get all that stuff better from the net.

VN is about competitive cycling coverage (road, MTB, cyclocross) the other content is filler-grade. That said, I've been a VN subscriber off and on since 1990 and I like it

CycleSport (British rag) has lots of nice biographies (albiet about racers, mostly), and does bike reviews and some tekky stuff. Great Tour coverage... but by the time it hits the stands here the Vuelta is already done.

I like Velonews. Enough training tips to keep you interested and learning some stuff, but the best part to me is the strong focus on domestic racing.

I am a subscriber, but I will not renew. I find between the online version as mentioned above, and other coverage, I find myself flipping through the issues rather quickly, because the news is old news by the time I take it out of the mailbox. Save the money. Probably the only thing I have been enthusiastic about is the great TDF supplement sent to subscribers.

Which, just to be clear, is also available on newstands so you need not be a subscriber to get it.

Velonews is great if you like pro racing, which I do. I do not often read it online. I also like Cyclesport America.

Cycle Sport is a great magazine, but it's pricey. It was a lot more fun when you could get the British version, which had lots of reviews and ads for stuff you couldn't buy here in the States.

I agree with Skydive69. Between Cyclingnews.com and Velonews.com, there's rarely much in each issue of Velonews that I haven't read already. Remember back in the day when you had to wait for the magazine to come out to find out details of a big race like the Tour?

I get it for the racing coverage myself. That's its strength.

Exaaaaccctly. The TdF Official Guide is the only one I buy...other new can be had online. It gives good team, rider, and course overviews. I keep it on the coffee table during the race as a reference. Worth the eight bucks.

I subscribe to Velonews and I read it slowly over a few days but nothing really stands out. But when "Road" comes stop everything I read it cover to cover that day.

Do you know any large chain stores that stock velonews, I'd like to get that issie. Maybe Barnes & Nobles? (i ask because it's a little far away from me and I don't want to do the trip for nothing)

Yeah, I've been really liking ROAD, too. VN pisses me off because I always get my issue after it's been on the newsstand. Still waiting for the TDF issue. What's the point in subscribing if you're going to get late news later than everyone else?

I wish we had a US equivalent of the British magazine Cycling Plus. Stop by a B&N or Borders to have a look. There is probably more interesting material in one issue of Cycling Plus than in a whole year of Bicycling; to bad the former is $8.95 per issue by the time it reaches our shores.

And worth every last cent of it, too.....I love the tours/rides section. Plus it is cool looking at some of the bikes that aren't available over here.

It's not much cheaper in the UK. For the quantity of information in each issue, CP is a better buy than Bicycling.

I like VN. People at work think it weird looking at a magazine with glossy photos of men in tight and lycra....**********
