Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Upgrading Shifters

Hello! I have a 2010 Trek 1.1 (I can't post the photo or link as I'm a new member) and it's got older 8 speed shifters ( Shifters -Shimano 2300 STI, 8 speed ). At the current moment as much as I'd like to upgrade and will do so in a few years I don't currently have the funds to upgrade to a new bike with newer components (I'm also really attached to the color of the bike).

What I'm currently looking to do is upgrade the shifters as they're an older style as you can see and I want to upgrade them into "dual levers" so I can shift up and down without having to change hand positions like I have to now.

I'm having trouble finding something that would be compatible with my current bike as I'm not an expert on the subject and don't particularly know what I need to look for. I know that I would like to keep them Shimano.

If anyone could help that would be amazing! Thanks.

(The bike can be found on Trek's website if you look up 2010 Trek Alpha 1.1)

I think your only option is R2400 claris shifters. R2000 uses an updated front derailleur design you've have to purchase as well if you want that updated shifter style with hidden cables. You'd be better off buying a whole groupset though if your chain and cassette are even somewhat worn however as the shifters are a significant portion of the entire cost

Thanks so much for your help! Would I want the 3x8 or the 2x8? I appreciate it.

If youre just getting the shifter get the shifters corresponding to the number of chainrings you have on the front of your bike currently(2-3 rings)

Bikes: 2015 Workswell 066, 2017 Workswell 093, 2014 Dawes Sheila, 1983 Cannondale 500, 1984 Raleigh Olympian, 2007 Cannondale Rize 4, 2017 Fuji Sportif 1 LE

From what I see online you would want 2x8 .... two front chain rings. As you note, the bike is equipped with Claris 2300 .... the 2400 people are recommending are a generation newer and better .... but you should already be able to shift without moving your hands. The 2300 and 2400 shifters are very similar (I have 2300 on a bike.) Both are dual-control STI, with the the brake lever also serving as the shift lever.

you must be misremembering. 2300 shifters have the thumb shifter for the down shift while the 2400 shifters have the two levers down low reachable from the drops

Pretty sure I am not mis-remembering ... because I went out to the garage to check. The thunmb-shifters might have been an earlier version ... i forget the number, I know I ordered a set and sent them back when they had a thumb-shifter but I think those were 7-speed.

But ... I went on a tour which used 2015 Dawes Sheila PRO bikes equipped with "Shifters: Shimano ST-2300/2303 shifters integrated into brake levers, 24-speed Triple" .... I brought one home and swapped the shifters to another bike. The shifters say Claris, the time period and the purchase agreements say 2300 .... but whatever. if his have thumb buttons and are 2300, then Shimano made both types using the 2300 name.

Thanks for all your help everyone! I'm going to get the 2400's 2x8. I don't need them to too fancy just something where I can shift without moving! These should work perfect!

Most likely bikesdirect ran out of stock and "upgraded" you without changing the specs, which is pretty common for them, claris didn't get dual control levers until 2400. https://road.cc/content/news/77271-s...laris-groupset

I think you might be right ... apparently Bikes Direct started shipping bikes with 2400 shifters in 2014 ... not sure why thy didn't advertise the fact. But thanks for helping me find the info. (https://forums.roadbikereview.com/sh...ed-306295.html)

Check MicroShift brifters for compatibility with your group. I recently swapped one bike (1993 Trek 5900 with some non-standard components, wheels, etc.) from downtube to MicroShift 7-speed and they worked great. Easy to install and set up. The 8-speed version appears to be otherwise identical.
