1. Because most riders (myself included) lack the talent to execute a 2xWhatever shift pattern efficiently. 1x simplifies shifting.

Ok, I'll play along, you can add these to your collection.
Here's my bike.
I had stopped for a photo anyway, so here's a selfie from that ride. I don't wear a helmet sometimes on gravel roads when I'm not going to be around cars with texting drivers.
Here's another one. It's easy to take lots of pictures of your bike … when you have a bike.
Here's one with some god beams.
Here's one with larches.
Snow!
I could do this all day, but it's your turn.
