What is going on with Garmin Connect?
When I tried to upload data at about 8 am, I got a message saying they were off-line. Same message at 6 30. So, I can't send my ride data to Strava. Anyone know what's going on?

Not sure what you mean. Is the site down or am I being extorted?
|
Probably Garmin is being extorted. It’s not you. Site down “for maintenance” is the official reason they say.

Thank you. Can I upload directly to Strava?

Great.

https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2020/07/...he-outage.html I'm too lazy to worry, at least for now. We'll see how long it goes. |

Another pandemic shutdown...

It's very easy. Plug your Garmin device into your laptop/pc and go to Garmin/Activities folder. Latest will be today's date for example and a .fit file. Save to desktop. Go to Strava, Upload new Activity, browse for the .fit file and upload it. Job done.

Yes, it's a them thing. Expect the site to be down indefinitely. It appears either their systems are completely integrated everywhere or they are paralyzed with fear, as their manufacturing is down as well.
Maybe by Monday things will be back to (ab)normal. |

A bit more here:
https://www.macrumors.com/2020/07/24...armin-offline/ Kind of weird to see a mostly empty Strava feed . . . |
Is MFA that hard to implement? If it's enabled across the board even elevation of privileges attacks can't do much. I believe I heard at RSA that it takes between 4 and 6 months for a company to realize they've been compromised.

Hacked. My hope is that Garmin encrypted the data at rest, although I am not counting on it. Here's hoping the backups are a) encrypted and b) not hit by the ransomware too.

Didn't think about that..... yeah, all my data from the first ride I did with my Edge 500 circa 2010 is safely stored on my computer with appropriate backups. I never wanted to trust Garmin, Strava, RWGPS or others to have to give it back when I might want it.

Great, does this mean Russian hackers are going to find out how slow I am?
|
As long as I don't lose my history I'll be happy.
|
I would be happier if I hadn't deleted the app from my phone to try to fix it before looking here.

If I don't pay 150 bitcoins, they will publicly post how slow I am climbing hills.

Garmin used to have a windows program that you could load all your rides into, also had mapping and could display your routes.
Good info on what happened here: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/new...omware-attack/ scott s. . |
Plugged my Garmin into my laptop when I got back, opened up Strava, and uploaded the most recent.fit file. Worked like a charm.

Inreach is down, this could kill someone.

I've worked in what is now called cybersecurity for a long time. Many smaller (like state and local) organizations skimp on backing up data and key executables and have been getting taken down. Most big companies (like Garmin) took steps a few years ago after several large companies had to announce $300M impacts due to ransomware - Garmin is big enough to have avoided or at least mitigated this.
But the bad guys are persistent - like those flies that get in the tent the very every time you forget to pull the zipper all the way up! Garmin web still saying right now "We are currently experiencing an outage that affects Garmin.com and Garmin Connect. This outage also affects our call centers, and we are currently unable to receive any calls, emails or online chats. We are working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible and apologize for this inconvenience." |
This can happen to any company for sure no matter their protective wall. These hackers are just as smart as those who build these encrypted legions. I don’t think those who did it care a rats rear about your personal rides or address. They are doing it out of maliciousness or as one stated, for ransom! The latter will never work obviously in regards to Garmin but it just creates a pain to us using Garmin. I can live until they fix it, I am not that pretentious.

It's awful for Garmin and those who rely upon their services that need to be live. I use Garmin for my cycling, Fenix Pro and 530 Edge, but it is very easy to upload to Strava with the .fit file so can't say I am affected in any negative way - I've literally only lost the auto upload function in terms of my own usage and manual is seconds to do.
