Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

After college I bought a 14 year old MGB, which turned out to be due for its patching and reinforcing. Then I moved to Ithaca, in central New York, where cars last 10 years, but there's not a "no rust-through" rule. Cars there last maybe 10-12 years. I saw 10 year old cars whose front fenders consisted of the inner fender liner and the headlight and side marker light areas, with the rest rusted away - that was a Chevy Vega. In Ithaca, mechanics were AMAZED at the wonderful state of my rusty MGB, because it was actually still on the road.

Two years later, I moved to California. Cars here last till they crap out mechanically and become unfixable, or they get totalled. Suddenly, my 'amazingly well preserved' MGB became 'a rusted out piece of s***', and when the brakes started failing, I could not get a mechanic to fix them - "Not without a tetanus shot!" said one. That was the end of my MGB. Traded it for a bottom-of-the-line Toyota.
They don’t really rust out that fast in upstate any more. We must be off the salt...

Alas there are none. I am not a photog. I can take a picture of the hole, before installing the sink. My wife might have an old shot of the original sink.
I tend to imprint rather than take pics. A thing I officially started in Ecuador, passing a particularly nice view of the Andes on the bus. I never carried a camera when traveling. Beginning at that incident, I imprint those 'pics' to the vault, where they remain still.

He's actually considered whether to buy a 1988 engine for it, but it would be pricey.

EDIT: I think this was about the very end of carburetors generally, when they'd added so many different adjustments that it had to be tweaked within an inch of its life just to run. This is why EFI took over. Yeah, a Holley 4bbl carb (or two) sitting on a big 7L V8 looks nice and gives me a nice warm feeling, but they were dinosaurs.
Oh yeah. I'm still dealing with 89 on down Grand Wagoneers that have those on them. Honda's, Tercels, Toyota pick ups, and again, GM Feedback carbs. If I lived in the rust belt, they'd be gone... At least I don't have to take a wire wheel to my hubs every time I rotate my tires.

I have cyclist's variant of RLS....means my legs are itchin' to go for a ride when I am stuck here at work. The only prescription is more cycling.

That's good. in 1980, my girlfriend bought somebody's "Winter Rat" - the crappy car you drive in the winter so your good car lasts longer. The car was an 11 year old Chevy Malibu. You could see the ground through the holes in the trunk. You could also smell the exhaust in the interior of the car. I'm surprised we didn't kill ourselves driving to her parents' house in Syracuse for a visit.

My friend and I used to say we could rebuild a Quadra Jet blindfolded. Never actually tried it but I would have bet I could do it.
I had a 1980 Grand Wagoneer when I lived in the mountains. It was a trade in where I worked and I paid $1100 for it. I used it as a truck to haul firewood, trash, and branches. It came with a 6"lift and big tires. It could cruise 60 mph in second gear with those tires and 2:74 diffs. Fun to drive in a creek!

He did it, dropped a good 10% power, which matched my readings yet realized he was going faster from day one. We both did it too late for the 40k, but the results were encouraging, to say the least. I'll be spending my off season getting stronger on that. I know a tri set up needs to be much more forgiving, but there are few people that can match road bike power on a TT bike. Rohan Dennis is one of them, but he's a freak.I say that in a very good way.
Yep and yep. The old P2 was the Ironman frame; the P3 was the TT frame. The P2's higher stack was designed specifically for helping people run off the bike, not for people with worse flexibility. I see the cycling pros unfolding themselves from their TT bikes and wince, but they sure are fast.

I still want power though, for regular riding and general aerobic gains. Hence my plan to do hard stuff on the horns and minimal easy work in aero, just to keep that ability. Who knows when I'll get to go play tri again anyway.

I bought a Cannondale 3.0 frameset years ago that looks identical except the rear dropouts are about an inch behind the seat stays. It was the first year that an aluminum fork was available as an option. It rides SO much smoother than the version 1 Cannondale I have. I know that's relative. I would never sell it, but then, I'm an N+1 guy.

Fingers crossed! That's pretty good temporary treatment for cyclist variant RLS, I would think.

I remember my reactions being about the same intensity.

Reminds me of my first real road bike - Cannondale R600, 3.0 frame with the cantilever seat stays. A 56 that was just a tad too small for me, and of course twitchy because it was 'crit geometry'. I still have it, but haven't ridden it in a dog's age.

Did you make it to Shady Maple? Is the Smorgasbord open? Apparently the place is quite famous.
