Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Di2 - set up to prevent X-chaining

Looking for a little help here. I have the 'new' Shimano Di2 12-speed. The bike came from the shop setup without X-chaining prevention setup. So I am able to be in little-big.

On my other bike, I have Di2 11-speed. On that bike the setup prevents me from getting into a X-chaining situation.

I would like to setup my 12 speed so that I am prevented from X-chaining. I have followed the instructions for connecting my phone/Shimano app to the 12-sped Di2. Trouble is, the feature/function to enable/disable X-chaining is not present on the app screen. I have looked at the Shimano website several times and nothing. The screens do not match up. What Shimano's website says I should be seeing the app is not showing me.

Any ideas? I am pretty sure I am running the most recent version of the app. Is it possible that my 12-speed Di2 does not support preventing X-chaining?

Thank you.

funny, my 12 speed di2 is the opposite, it doesn’t allow little-little and when I looked for the setting to turn it off, I couldn’t find it either.

Cross chaining is little-little or big-big. Assuming you mean one of the latter, at least for 11sp cross-chaining is allowed for certain combinations of front and rear cog sizes. If you configured the correct front chainring size and cassette and Di2 still lets you cross-chain then it means it's not a big deal.

I haven't updated my firmware since 2015 because I don't want it preventing me from cross-chaining. I understood that to be the default behavior, at least with the small/small combo (which I like it to be in when I remove the wheel). My wife's bike is like that with the default set-up. Maybe the newer shadow GRX derailleur isn't supposed to go into small/small; the chain sags a bit when I manually put it there.

Fully synchronized shifting will prevent you from being cross chained. However you can defeat that in eTube be telling it not to shift the front until you are already cross chained in the big/big. For the small/small you might have to lie about what your rear cassette range is. At least this is true for 11 speed Di2. I'd think at least the full synchronized shifting will keep your 12 speed Di2 from cross chaining, incorrect setup notwithstanding.

You loose the ability to chose when you do and when you don't cross chain though. So there sometimes is some frustration with the time it takes to make the required shifts that otherwise would have been a few moments of cross chaining.

12-speed Dura-Ace locks out small x small by default. Usually that can be switched off by toggling "Gear Position Control" (depends on the selected chain rings in the software).

12-speed Ultegra / 105 do not have "Gear Position Control", and will allow you to shift into the smallest sprockets while in the little ring up front. This cannot be changed.

And yeah, Synchronized Shift is a decent work-around, if you're into synchro shifting

I think problem/non-issue solved?

Thanks everyone. Looks like I made an error when I posted. What I am looking to stop is going small-small. Currently with my Di2 setup, which is set in semi-synchro, I am able to got small-small. I do not want this. I am looking to setup the Di2 with locking out small-small.

Yet when I connect the Di2 via Bluetooth to the Shimano app I do not see the option to prevent this. According to the Shimano website there is a toggle within the app but that toggle is not there. The gear position control that TerryDi2C talks about cannot be found.

I am 99% certain I have the proper cassette range entered into the software. At least everything seems to be working properly for shifting.

And like Polaris OBark mentioned I am leery of doing too many updates to the firmware for fear of possibly bricking the system.

Thanks again. Apologies for the earlier confusion.

How old is your battery? The battery contains the relevant firmware, and if you have 1st-gen 11-speed, it won't let you enable these features.

This post (Photos of YOUR bicycle near WATER) suggests that you're on 12-speed Ultegra.

Like I wrote in my comment, 12-speed Ultegra does not have GPC
