Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New MGC Wheelset on the way...

I just ordered a set of wheels from Mike at Oddsandendos... Im going with Velocity OC / 32 rear and 28 fronts... Should see them in about 3 weeks. I'm moving from the original A-Class AKX rims to these, so I hope the weight savings helps on some of the little hills around here...

Now to order my compact crank...

Congrats and good choice. What was the price if I may ask? It says on the site that as of July 1 the prices were going to go up but I don't see any differences in the prices as they have been listed on the site.

FWIW Those Velocity rims are the same ones Easton/Velomax uses in the Ascent and Orion wheel sets.

Oh and if you are looking for a compact crank, look at the Ritchey WCS compact. You can get it for $125.98 from AE Bike (I got mine from Performance and they price matched AE Bike) and they work great. Nice and stiff and shifting is much better than I expected even without a compact front derailleur.

That's the exact crank I've been looking at. Thanks for the pricing tip. As for my wheels they were $299. Mike said that the front Velocity rims are running a little bit heavier on the last few shipments because of a die that is wearing at the plant but nothing significant. I went with anodized gray rims and silver everything else. I thought about doing the powdercoat thing, but worried that I might get a different frame and didn't want to be color limited. My current rims and hubs are all black so I was looking for a change....

Good choice on the wheels. I've got pretty much the same setup at Grasschopper--the DT rims/Speedcific hubs, 32 spoke in the back and 28 in front. Very nice wheels. I'm actually waiting now for a new rear from Mike--a Velocity Deep V, XE14 spokes (32) and Speedcific hub. This will be my everyday rear wheel, and I'll be holding onto the DT rear for special occasions and for the more hillly/mountainous rides.

Compact cranks are great too, I'm using the FSA Gossamer Mega Exo. Its a great setup too that I have been very happy with. I still use my standard Dura Ace front derailleur with no problems as well.
