Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

That describes today’s crash scene. At least two others went way over the center line but stayed up.
There's one corner on Altamont Rd in Los Altos Hills, which is really deceptive. It's after a sharp drop-off, and it's both decreasing radius AND off camber. On a BF NorCal forum group ride, one guy lost it going around there. The group was strung out from the climb just before that, so we were all solo by that point. Another rider came around the corner and found him and his Litespeed lying on the edge of the road. He was unconscious, and of course didn't remember the accident.

Here's the corner. You can't see it till you come around a righthand bend, and it doesn't LOOK that bad, but you can see it's off-camber.

On another of those rides, we were going down 84 from Skyline, and one rider just went right over the guardrail. Luckily he wasn't hurt, but his bike was. A guy in a minivan on the other side of the road stopped when he saw the crash and gave him ride home.

I stopped going on those rides after that....

I’m happy if I know the road and the auto traffic isn’t too threatening. I’m actually happier on curves because my motor system is actively engaged. I get shaky on long fast straights. If I’m cold and shivering I sometimes have to slow to a walk.

The upside of having no memory my 44 mph swerve is: I have no issue doing 44 mph.

I know that Altamont section well. It doesn't help that it gets quite steep in parts. I rode down that a few days ago with traffic, and the road was wet. I usually descend pretty fast, but not that day.

Those little Los Altos Hills roads take some practice.

How's Moody Rd. by comparison?

Worse. Steeper, with tighter turns, and the steep section is longer. Lots of braking required.

I did a ride called the Mulholland Challenge a few times. The first time I rode it with a woman from the forum and her husband was faster so he went ahead. There is a long, steep, twisty descent called Deer Creek. When we went down it there were a bunch of riders in the bushes. Around one turn there were 2 guys sitting on the ground. Crazy. At the bottom there was a sag stop and they told my friend that her husband had crashed and broke his frame but had got a ride back to the start and he wanted her to complete the ride.

I think Terry was on that ride.

I do. Unless the urge to see a 300-mile inland 1/2 scale replica of Titantic strikes, which so far hasn't happened.

Beautiful sunset in Flagstaff. Damn, this town needs a nickname! Suppose I could call it by the Diné name but it's really a mouthful.

I was getting graupeled on when I took this pic #trooper

Nothing to be ashamed of, it’s pretty reckless behavior imo, especially if you have a family. A lot of the daredevil utes we grew up with ain’t around anymore, they had their fun until one day it caught up with them. After a certain age the big head is supposed to take over the thinking duties from the little head.

I am thinking he won’t be riding for 6-8 weeks.

I'm not in the know about such things. Does that bike have a crabon frame? I suspect it does.
