Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I do miss the feeling of adventure, and being out on the road for the sunrise. That is quite nice. Would I do that regularly any more? Hell no, in the garage I go.

60 percent of my rides are in the dark. The best part is lack of traffic, the worst part is, on some of the isolated places it’s pitch black and I watched the movie wrong turn. I do miss riding during the day, but it is nice getting my ride in first thing in the morning when most people are still sleeping.

Fun fact, many people (Americans at least) think that yodeling came from country music. It actually came from the Swiss alps, as a way to broadcast sound down long grassy mountain slopes. "Time for dinner!!!" etc. It was later adopted by American country singers.

Your fake miles are still in a file on your computer (assuming you used a computer). Look in the Zwift folder. There should be a folder full of files with names that correspond to the dates of your Zwift rides.

I don't like riding in the dark and I don't trust the people who drive in the pre-dawn or post-dusk hours to not kill me.

Thats fine, I get it. I feel that I am much more visible in the dark, during the day you have a lot more cars on the road, soccer moms glued to tick tock and instagram. Most mornings I only get passed 6-10 times. Very rare for me to get buzzed in the morning, but it still happens sometimes.

Another (not so) fun fact, many Americans couldn’t identify even 10% of the countries on the world map… and I’m not thinking about the people who have not had an opportunity to learn.

I wouldn’t put day drivers in a significantly better category.
In fact, slightly late-to-work and trying-to-get-out-before-others at the end of a work day are the worst lot in my opinion.
That’s why I add an extra mile or two to avoid busy roads altogether.

The other thing is, I am a Night Owl. I take a long time to get going in the morning, so if I were going to ride at, say 6 AM, I'd have to get up at about 5. This is really difficult for me, while at the other end of the day, I can't go to sleep before 11 or I won't sleep through the night. Along about 2 AM my body will say, "That was a nice nap!" and I'll be awake for at least the next two hours.

I suppose I could try riding after dinner and before bed, but I know who's out on the roads then.

Meh... I spend most of my time in the dark, what's another hour or 2? Come to think of it, Thursday night we only did one lights on ride. Figures after I bought a bunch of high powered headlights and rear blinkies.

When I ride during the week, it's after work on roads that are either wide and straight with wide bike lanes or back roads with little or no traffic. I would not ride from home on weekdays. The first 2-4 miles of my route would have way too many commuters.

Well, you COULD, and it's easier now that closing a ride doesn't drop you out of Zwift. The thing is, after you've maxed out your HR in the final sprint, you're probably not in full possession of your mental faculties (I know I'm not!).

What it boils down to is that, based on decades of experience, I know if I have to get up really early to ride, I won't ride. If I have to ride in the dark, I won't ride. If I have to ride a dumb trainer staring at a wall, I won't ride. If I can get on Zwift, with a Smart trainer, I'll ride. I don't mind Zwift. I mean, sure, it's not as much fun as a nice ride outside, but FOR ME it's preferable to riding in the dark or getting up in the dark to ride at dawn.
