Hello, which clip-on shoes should I use with


these pedals?

A quick Google search found a link to a site that this site will not let me post about. Try it yourself.

However, it seems Look Delta cleats will work. Any cycling shoe that accepts the cleats bolt pattern will work.

Yes, Look Delta. Old design but the cleats are still available. I used the Red cleats which give a bit of float. They're called 3 hole cleats.

And they're called "clipless" pedals.

So you need “road” shoes (3 holes in sole not two) and “Delta” or equivalent cleats.

If you have trouble locating LOOK Delta cleats, check wherever the spinning folks get their equipment…maybe at one of those spinning studios. Early in the clipless era, I went with LOOK pedals. At that time LOOK only had the Delta format. So, as my bike collection grew, I continued to put LOOK pedals on each of my bikes so that I would only need one pair of shoes (or, not a separate pair for each bike). Then, years ago…for whatever reason…LOOK decided to stop producing/supporting the Delta format and went to their Keo format. Thankfully, around that same time…as spinning was gaining popularity…it appears the Delta format became the spinners’ format of choice for their clipless systems. Consequently there are now third party manufacturers making them (and Delta format pedals), and I never had to change pedal/cleat formats.

I'd pick the shoes first and then get the pedal for the cleat type of those shoes. Good pedals can be inexpensive if you aren't picky. Shoes have to fit and you need to be picky about that.

Shoes don't come with cleats attached. You can attach Delta, SPDSL, WahooSpeedplay etc..

Thanks for all your very helpful advice. I’ve actually bought the shoes already, but not the cleats yet. As the shoes allow for the three hole cleat, would any three point one (like the SPD-SL) fit the pedal or do I have to get a Look Delta one?

Any three hole cleat will fit the shoes but the pedals you pictured require a specific cleat. To me, those pedals look like the old Delta style, which was also used by Shimano and Mavic pedals back in the early 90s..
I don't think you can use an SPD-SL cleat on those pedals.

No they don't come with cleats attached. You are correct.

But shopping for shoes at local bike shops in some places can leave one with not a lot of selection to choose from. And shoes do determine whether you use two hole cleats or three hole cleats. So if shoes for two hole cleats are all that can be found that are comfortable or desirable, then the pedal will need to change.

However we just learned the OP already bought shoes. So again, you are correct! <grin>

Correct. SPD-SL, Keo and Delta are not interchangeable.

I would consider buying some new Keo pedals personally. Those look very tired and the entry level pedals aren’t expensive.

Your best and cheapest source for Delta cleats is Ebay. Red have float, black are fixed. No need to buy genuine Look, any knockoff will work fine Make sure the hardware is included.

I'm still using Delta red cleats. The genuine Look cleats last longer than the aftermarket variety but the Looks tend to squawk when I'm climbing.

Are you certain? I know the Shimano cleat looked very similar to the LOOK Delta cleat…but I don’t recall them being interchangeable. Now that I think about it…I recall years ago trying to clip my Deltas into a Shimano pedal. It kind of ‘snapped’ into place, but then it didn’t really hold under pressure.

The earliest PD-7401 and PD-6401 pedals used Look Delta cleats. The later generations used a different cleat.

+1 on buying new pedals. Look or Shimano entry level road pedals (cleats are supplied with pedals).

I can tell you from personal experience that pedals do not last forever.I had a pair of Look pedals (made by Look but branded as Performance) that had a lot of miles on them. They had a bit of play in the spindle, probably needed new bearings. One of them gave out on the trainer while I was standing on the pedals - the pedal body broke and that broke the spindle. That hurt! I ended up replacing my old Look Delta pedals with new Look Keos - at $45 each, because Pro Bike Kit was having a sale.

ProBikeKit have some great deals on pedals. That’s a no-brainer at $45 to replace those ancient relics.

We-e-elll.... If I only had a couple bikes, yeah. But with 10, I wasn't going to spend $450 on pedals, so I ended up buying 4 pair and a new pair of shoes. Now my post-1990 bikes all have Keos and my older bikes had (mostly) Shimano Delta-compatibles.
