Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hey HipCycler - Wisconsin Rocks!!

Just got back from my bicycling...uhh.. I mean, fishing trip to Sturgeon Bay. Didn't end up taking my bike because of all the headaches, but only 1 mile from our lodge I found DC Bikes.

They were a wonderful bunch of people. $25/day or $35 for 2 days for an OCR3; wasn't my TCR, but in the situation, would have gladly forked over much more. Although I did end up spending about $75 in the store besides the rentals.

Rode Bayshore Drive for a couple hours. Couldn't have asked for a more beautiful couple of days & the people were just great. Hope I get drawn for the trip next year, & wished I had a LBS like DC Bikes.

rode near the dells sun. great 75 degree day. Random tour. First stop was at a social event for 150 yr celibration for a country church. Had an angel singing county songs on a flat bed truck. Everyone dressed in Sunday best. Offered me food and drink. next stop was at a small town softball tournament. Had a hot dog and enjoyed a couple of innings of big chested guys creaming the ball. Last stop was enjoying a pop while setting on the bench in the dells watching the talent. I love wisc in the summer.

When I grew up my family owned a little restaurant across from the entrance to Peninsula State Park in Fish Creek/Door County. I basically spent three summers riding through the park to Eagle Tower, practically every day.

Now, thirty years later, I can't wait to get back there. I want to see if the climb up Middle Road is as steep as I remember it.

Is that a little pizza restaurant now? I ate there last fall if it is.

I spent the first week of August in Door County. We stayed in a place on the Lake Michingan side north of Bailey's Harbor and I rode *everywhere* -- from Gill's Rock and Washington Island to Whitefish Dunes State Park. I got in about 200 miles altogether. Beautiful place to ride!

At some point after we owned it, there was a pizza place there, so it's possible. It was right on the main highway, opposite the road that entered the park, next to the big church with the big parking lot (we also rode laps around the church, around and around, to see how far we could go).

Did you do any riding in the park?

We were up at 3 am, fished til 10am; caught some great Salmon the 2nd day, spent much of the first day chumming. The rest of the day was all ours & I couldn't fathom wasting the beautiful atmosphere in the bar like many did.

Don't know if we quite made it to Fish Creek, seen a steep hill if we would have taken a right turn, but we were beginning to feel sorry for the guy riding the comfort bike in wranglers, long sleeve shirt & cowboy boots.

I've done the Door County Century several times, last year on the tandem at 19.4 mph

We usually stay at the hotel right where you are talking about while several of our friends stay in the park. We did a family ride through the park last year, it's very nice indeed!

Funny story, a few years ago, a FIB was staying in a room near us and we starting talking. He said there were a lot of hills in Door county I told him to come to the Wright Stuff Century for a good flat ride Seriously, Door County is about the flattest century I've done.

Hey, I resemble that remark!

FIB's... ha! We can't help it if we must go north to Cheese Nation for some hills and nice scenery.

Next time you should take the ferry over to Washington Island. If I remember right the ferry is free for cyclists and there are alot of nice roads on the island with few cars.
