When I was a ute, the main route through PA was the Turnpike, and the Turnpike Commission allowed only ONE company to run the food concessions - Howard Johnsons - and only ONE company to sell gas - Gulf. The rest areas were maybe 25-30 miles apart, along the whole length from Ohio to New Jersey. This was especially handy when my brother's Simca 1000 overheated and we had to stop at each rest stop and check the radiator level. God, that thing was a piece of ****. It was so underpowered that going up any gradient, we had to put on the flashers because we were below the 45 mph minimum speed. It was one of those cars that I guess worked fine in Europe where cities and towns are close together but in America's wide open spaces it was just crap.

A great tune for sure. Here's a low-key cover that's more my speed. The drummer in this band (Dave King) is really something special.

Today’s edification:
I lived fewer than two blocks away from here for much of the 90s.

It’s home to a group of “Pink Sisters”. They pretty much prey all day and live solely off donations. People would even mail them cash.

At some point they noticed that donations were down. Turned out their mail carrier was stealing them. He was caught. I remember thinking that if there is a hell, there is a special place with his name on it.

Did a quick 20 miler today. Seemed like a bit more work than usual. Varia would not connect to the Edge 830 so spent a fair amount of time futzing, disconnecting and reconnecting, powering everything on and off and finally got it, but don’t know exactly what I did since I retraced my steps several times - the definition of insanity. Mid-way a very portly chocolate lab decided he wanted to be my buddy and trotted out to me and received head and back scratches which made him bark and howl in approval. He hung with me for at least 3 minutes wanting more scratches. Had a pretty good block head wind on the return trip to where I parked the car. While raising the bike onto the rack I saw the rear rim was slightly out of true and rubbing on the brake. Oh swell. No wonder I felt like I was putting out more effort for less return. Got home and got out the spoke wrench and improved it so no more rubbing and a lot more true - but far from perfect.

Winged it on a pan/pasta sauce last night.
First, raw Italian sausages, to build a yummy base for the fond. Then I took them out. Onions, Zucchini, plenty of seasoning (oregano, S&P). Took the Zucchini out so it wouldn't get mushy, let the onions reduce and also burn a bit on the bottom. Heat way up, then deglaze with a cup of dry red. In goes 1 can tomato sauce, 1 big can crushed tomatoes, 8 oz chicken broth, the sausages, more seasoning and red pepper flakes.
We let it go for about 2.5 hrs total. Reduced/reconstituted a couple times, one time with pasta water for the starch. End product was quite nice, paired real well with a "Super Tuscan" style red, half Sangiovese half Bordeaux grapes. After an arugula salad.

the start of something good

sizzle & scrape time

this was life for a couple hrs

yum

With Mrs RSbob out of commission due to her accident, and me being a better consumer than provider of dinner, we started using the meal service Factor. The food has been surprisingly good. Most are a 8 or 9 out of 10 with only a couple, never agains. They have excellent variety and deliver on protein. Since they deliver weekly and the price is unbelievably reasonable, we may continue to use them on a.more limited basis when she is recovered just to give her a break (so to speak since she has two already) and when we don’t feel like going out. (No affiliation).

Kevin sacked out with his security shirt. He obviously needs a bigger recliner.
