Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Anyone have any scoop on Civil War Century?

Has anyone done this ride? Would it be worth a drive up from North Carolina to ride in it? I've always enjoyed Civil War history and also enjoy riding.......seems like a good combination!

I'd be curious about the climbs-how long and steep the 4 mountain climbs might be if anyone has done them or has any info.

It's a nice tour. Not sure if it would be worth the drive. It's not a terribly hard ride.

I can't help a lot because I've never done the Civil War Century itself, but I've done other century rides that included either the Gettysburg battlefield or Antietam battlefield. Both Gettysburg and Antietam are excellent places to ride, especially if you're interested in the Civil War. Bicycling is the perfect way to really enjoy these historic areas. I hope to join this ride for the first time this year myself.

Last year I drove 362 miles to do this ride. I only did the metric(because of family issues) and I am coming back again to do the 100 mile century.

The 60 went north to Gettysburg through some very nice riding territory. After I finished we drove the century route to Antietam.

I am a history buff and and I had never been to either battlefield.

Just the experience of riding a bicycle approaching Little Round Top on a bicycle is enough to draw me back. If you haven't been there before, I would also suggest taking a map of the Gettysburg battlefield because the ride doesn't- (I dodn't think it did last year?)include all of the battlefield and you might want to alter the route to get in places like the fields of Pickett's chrage?

I would suggest doing this ride as it is one of the best rides I did last year.

If you go, I hope that you enjoy the ride.

PS: I missed a lot of the climbs on the ride last so I might be singing a different tune come Saturday night.

The 19th, but I don't think that's a scoop.

Watch for the registration dates; they are cutting it off at a certain number this year, and aren't planning to accept any day-of registrations.

It is worth the drive. It is beautiful country and has nice hills, nothing terribly hard, but a lot of nice terrain.....you will get a nice workout and will feel it the next day....

Edit: I just noted the date of the original post
...but it still applies!

The climbs are easy, like 5% grades. I highly recommend the drive from NC for the CWC. One of the most beautiful rides in the Atlantic Seaboard. A lot of the ride is through rolling Mennonite farm land, just really sweet. Last year was very hot, so I would recommend starting very early morning, which is probably the most idyllic part of the day anyway. I started a bit late and really roasted in the last 20 miles. In the last third of the ride, when you roll through the Gettysburg battlefield, it is hauntingly quiet and it gave me goosebumps. All the chatting amonst the riders seemed to stop as I rode through.

You won't get to "see" or learn a lot about Civil War history since you will be pedaling through the area, so I would plan an extra day on your trip to tour the battlefields and whatnot. It is just a wonderful century: truly beautiful and peaceful.

(edit: just noted the date as well. Wonder if the OP is still around and what he/she thought. Definitely worth the trip, Rugby)
