Does Giant make frames for Trek and Specialized?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Who gives a ****? Giant is the only one Colnago trusts to make frames for them. THAT'S all you need to know. Trek is way behind the eight ball/

PS. The only country of cars that I will NEVER EVER buy from is the USA. No offense, but I don't trust the workers building the cars. And quality is on the large hand, terrible. Besides, where do you think Boeing gets its carbon fiber for the 787?

Giant does Treks CF now...all but the OCLV bikes. And you know Honda, Toyota, Subaru, BMW and others all have auto plants in the US right? There is actually more American made going on in some "Japanese" cars than several American cars.

Today ALL cars regardless of country of origin are mutts, parts to make these cars come from ALL OVER the world. Also Ford owns 45% of Nissian and 45% of Mazda, GM own 45% of Toyota, Mercedes Benz owns Chrysler and there are other car companies that own other companies but I don't know all the stuff on that.
I guess someone has misinformed you badly. A few facts:

Actually - according to many industry-specific studies, they have the worst record in terms of warranty returns and overall quality.

Ford now owns 3% of Mazda - though their holding was almost 40% (IIRC) as recently as 2008.

Mercedes Benz USED to own a controlling stake in Chrysler. They sold several years ago, and when the big-3 were in trouble, Fiat bought 20% of Chrysler, and have steadily increased that ownership to 54%, and they have options to increase that stake to 70%.

Still - I take the point. It's an old conundrum in international economics:

Which is the "American" car: The Chevy built in Canada, or the Toyota built in the USA?

Check the date of the post...I think they did own the controlling share at the time of the post....this was brought back from the dead.

Six years of dedicated research and, FINALLY, we get an answer.
Looks that way. And this is a few years old because the Defy replaced the OCR in 09.

Don't know if this has been said specifically, but on the cars side of things, buying American is about research. A lot of Ford's are made in Mexico, a lot of Toyota's are made here. BMW's new X3 is built in South Carolina. American made in Mexico, Japanese and German made in the USA. Check the window stickers of various models next time you are out, within a single manufacture cars can be made all over the place (BMW's are made in Germany, Austria, South Africa, South Carolina, and MINI's in UK and Austria), just like bikes. I think it has gotten to the point where you should just buy what you want, screw where its made for the most part.

I like how a bike thread turned into a vehicle thread. And yes, I realize this was started in 2005, then it died, then reborn in 2011, then died again and then resurrected in 2015 by yours truly. I wonder what's changed in the past few years... ;-)

Natch! Suckered. This thread is so old wages have gone up overseas and all the new bikes are shipped in from Mars. I'm going back over to the hate thread.

Well, it's been a few days since we've had a "Buy American" or "I want my Italian bike to be built in Italy" thread. Might as well keep this one going.

Most Japanese cars sold in the U.S. are assembled in the U.S. using parts built in the U.S. My Honda is more American than many American branded cars that use parts from all over the world or are assembled in Mexico or <gasp!> Canada.

As long as the quality is there, I don't care where the bike, car, furniture, clothing, etc. is made.

Labor is getting more expensive in China these days and so places like Vietnam and Cambodia are being looked at for cheaper labor.
