Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

First thread and first question

Hi, I have been checking BF for a while, decided today to get my feet wet and conribute to this forum. I have been riding for 3-4 months. I have 4 year old Performance aluminum bike with carbon fork, with all 105 grupo. I upgraded the wheels to Shimano 540, the seat post to carbon, the seat to Fizik, and the shifters as they started to die on me are being changed to Ultegras right now at my local lbs. I bought all my components new or barely used of ebay. Needless to say I saved a lot. The whole bike has cost me so far around USD500.
Last week on thanksgiving day I did my first metric century, I started strong then I bonked with only 10 miles left to get home, the worst part was the head wind that picked up and my saddle sores from my old Selle Italia seat. First thing I did when I got home is to buy a new saddle. The bike is very responsive and very fast, however it rides very rough. So i decided to buy a new CF bike, more comfortable to be able to enjoy longer rides. I like the Orbeas but I think it is too early for me to spend that much. I have the chance to purchase a 05 Specialized Roubaix Comp Triple for USD1500. It feels much better then my existing bike and fits me better. My question will be about the price; Is it a good deal? should I get it? what are your reviews and opinions about this bike?
Sorry for the long thread, I will try next time without the intro to make it shorter.

If you like the bike go for it. I believe the 05 comes with Ultegra/D.A. group doesn't it. I think the 06 is around $2000.

There are several Roubaix owners on this forum. You might do a search and pull up some older posts on the subject.

$1500 for a 2005 roubaix comp triple is a really good price, it's hundreds less than the Roubaix Elite (one model down from the Comp) was selling for six months ago. Originally I think the Comp double/triple were $2250.

Here's the Specialized page for the 2005 Comp Triple:
https://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCBkM...keTab=techspec

You get the full carbon monocoque frame, ultegra levers and brakes, and the dura ace rear derailleur for $1500. Mavic Ksyrium Equipe wheelset, too, which is about $275 by itself. Remember Specialized frames have a lifetime warranty for the original owner.

Lots of people seem to have a Roubaix on this board, and reviews are generally favorable. I have a 2004 Roubaix Comp triple. I like that it's a relatively fast bike and it doesn't beat you up when the pavement gets really bad. For the price you're being offered the bike, I would be very tempted.

For future posts, it'd be worth your while (and ours) to write a subject line that's actually informative about what you're asking.
Welcome to the forum.

It sounds as if you made a quick jump from "my saddle hurts" to "I want to spend $2000 on a new bike." However, it may be worth being cautious here. Sure, Aluminum bikes ride harsh, even with upgrades both useful and unnecessary. But it might be best for you to keep riding this bike for awhile, as you think more about exactly what would be best for the sort of riding that you do, instead of just jumping headfirst into a quick purchase of an admittedly nice bike.
Alternately, perhaps you have a ton of knowledge and have thought this new purchase through for months. But it sounded a bit impulsive.

Thank you all for your feedbacks.
thewalrus, yes the price seems very good, the 05s were ultegra/dura-ace, were sold for 2800 MSRP. The 06s come with 105/ultegra and are sold for 2200 MSRP. I prefer the way 05 looks better then 06.
timcupery, thanks for the tip, I'll keep it in mind. I have been thinking for a while about purchasing a CF bike, I was interested in the Scattante CFR. Then I thought about waiting a little bit more time at least for spring to buy a new bike at the mean time upgrade my ride as I go. But this deal sounded to good to let go.
As far as knowledge I am still learning about the details. I have some idea but need much more. I ride more medium distances once or twice a week, around 50 miles each. I live in Central Coast of California so I practicaly can ride the whole year and intend to do it. I am planing to leave my alu bike for fast short distance rides and the CF for my longer rides and the centuries I hope to complete.
