Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Quite simply because there was nothing in the article that said the driver did anything wrong. I was simply basing my reply on the facts that were given...nothing more. The cyclist was going the wrong way . Based upon this information, and the fact that he got a citation from the police, leads me to believe the at the cyclist is at fault. Are you so biased against drivers that you are not able to give in to the fact that this cyclist may just have been doing something stupid, for which he alone deserved a ticket? I do not mean to be antagonistic....but sometimes it is NOT about everyone when there is an accident. We, as cyclists, have to be responsible on the road in order to gain the respect we deserve. No matter how you feel, riding against traffic is WRONG!!! And in the opinion of the officer the cyclist was simply WRONG!!

I can only go on the information that was given.

If this cyclist is 35 years old, which is stated in the article, then he should KNOW the rules of the road...PERIOD. Let's get real. I knew these rules when I was 7 years old. If he was not sure, he should have looked into it. It is time we took responsibility for our actions and stopped blaming circumstances. If you are unknowingly driving the wrong way down a one way street and get pulled over, what do you think you would get if you told the officer that you didn't know you were going the wrong way?, especially if you hit someone. Yes it is true that these things may not be taught like they should be, but you have 1 out of 2 chances to get it right, if you are not sure, then make sure. If you THINK you are right and end up being wrong, then THAT is your own fault. It it his (and our) responsibility to know the rules of the road...period.

Just 2 nights ago in the dark I saw an idiot riding

* with no lights
* against traffic
* on a busy 2-lane street with no shoulder

I almost hit him because I didn't have much room to dodge him. I kind of wish I had hit him now that I know I wouldn't have gotten in trouble for it.

when did "I knew it in 3rd grade" ever be the determining factor that EVERYONE knows something at the same time?

If that were the case, then why doesn't everyone know the capital of every state? I knew that in 3rd grade? heck, even I don't know them all now. There are, in fact, people who didn't learn the same things everyone else learned and who have never ridden with anyone else, for whatever reason.

The guy definitely should have received the ticket... but to imply he knew it was wrong because YOU knew it or because "everyone" learns it... is just simply ignorant. I don't ever recall anyone of any authority telling me what side of the ride to ride my bike on... in fact, the only thing I remember is that my step mom told me to ride on the sidewalks and walk the bike across the street. That was 2nd grade and that's the last I ever heard of it. Give the guy a little slack for being ignorant... everyone has that right.

Why should I when all I see in these forums are cyclists refusing to do the same for drivers who have accidents with cyclists? In so many of those cases all I see are replies like "that cager is a moron" and should be jailed for whatever crime. Cylists are not above abiding by traffic laws, and are not automatically an innocent victim when an accident happens. If you are going to ride on the roads then it is your responsibility to KNOW the rules OF the road...period. It is not being ignorant to suggest that, but it IS irresponsible, not to mention stupid, to be on the roads without knowing the rules for riding on them. What is interesting is that in none of the replies that disagree with me do I see the word "responsibility." Why is this?

Just had this happen last night. Riding home from work in the bike lane, come up on a guy going the opposite way (against traffic), no lights, no helmet, and tried to force me into traffic to go around him. Instead I headed straight for him forcing him to stop and informed him that he was on the wrong side of the road, that a light was required to be riding at night, and continued on my way.

++

I freely run red lights but never, ever go the wrong way unless a street is under construction or something like that. I'd rather be on the sidewalk at 3mph.
