iPod Mounting

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

iPod Mounting

Has anyone developed a way to securely jimmy-rig and iPod to their bars?

They make armbands for those. Why don't you just wear it on your arm?

For me it would be so much easier to have a mount right in front of me so that I can look down to change the song, volume, et al.

Yes! I don't ride with my ipod or anything that impairs my hearing but I do like it on the trainer.

What I did was I bought one of those neoprene arm adaptors that runners use. It came with a clip for a belt. I took a handle bar mount for a HR watch and zip tied the belt clip to it. I then just put the hr mount on the bars (in my case the stem) and clip the ipod onto it. I can send pix if this doesn't make sense. The whole thing was 30 bucks but I use the neoprene cover to protect the ipod so it has a dual purpose.

I've heard you can hold it between your teeth

On the other hand I've always believed that if you really enjoy cycling or running, you don't need any device to 'lessen the boredom'. Plus these distractions are dangerous.

hook it to your arm. if you have to get of the bike you wont have your ear bud wire connecting you to the bike.

I guess i will have to ask, why do you need music blasting in your ears while you ride? Why if your on roads would you want the distraction? On a chunk of single track you should be more worried about the tree liimb that is about to take you head off. ok maybe on a multi use trail but that would be about it. or on rollers or on a trainer but why on the road or trail?

You could do the same thing with a rubberband, but for $10, that's pretty slick:

This is where I came up with my idea. I did exactly the same thing with a big rubber band and hr bar mount. Then I came up with the belt clip mount and it's way more stable and the neopreme cover protects the ipod from sweat.

I put mine in my back jersey pocket. I cut a very small hole in the jersey that is in the pocket to run the headphone wire inside my jersey up through the neck and to my ear. I also have a Griffin Air Click (around $20) which is a wireless remote control that controls volume and changes tracks and pause that comes with a bracket that velcros to my stem. Works really good. I was concerned that the fabric would ravel where I cut the hole but I have two or three jerseys that I did this with over two years ago and have been washed hundreds of times and no raveling.

Yeah, thats what I do put in my jersey pocket and use the remote clipped to my jersey. Choose my fav riding music and rock on. Don't really use it on the road just on the training rollers.

doesn't the iPod have moving parts?

I have an arm strap--affixing it to the bike doesn't seem like a great idea, but it seems like people are doing it and not having problems... yet

Mounting to your bars isnt the smartest idea. The vibrations will be pretty large and could damage the drive in your iPod. It is much smarter to wear it on your arm or in a jersey pocket.

the moving parts may be an issue on the non-flash ipods.. but i have never heard of people running into problems..
ipod nano has no moving parts though..

the 20GB/30GB/40GB/60GB all use hard drives... though it isn't spinning all the time, the ipod spins up the hard drive, reads about 32MB of mp3 in your queue into a RAM buffer, and then spins down the drive again. this is how it maintains a decent battery life. I wouldn't want to put one on my bars, bad things might happen if it was spinning the drive at the same time as I hit a large bump. Putting it in your jersey pocket absorbs a lot of road vibration...
