Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Rad Goes Home To L.A.

And for the first time in many years, I actually miss it. 80 freakin' degrees and the air is as clean as it ever gets. After 3 weeks of solid Oregon rain, this is REAL nice. Just hangin' by the pool with the laptop...

But alas, I have things to do and getting out for a ride isn't on the list.

Bummer.

What a shame, weather like that shouldn't be wasted on unworthy non-cycling endeavors!

I'm not sure what LA was like 5, 10 or 15 years ago, but since I've moved here, I like it. I've heard lots of people trash LA -- mostly people, who IMO, are jealous and somehow not able to leave their cold weather climates due to job, family, etc or New Yorkers or Bostonians w/ a east coast vs. west coast mentality. And until a decent job offer and the NEED to skip winter for at least a few years, LA was never even on my radar.

Maybe it's my low expectations of LA and SoCal, but overall I'm pretty happy (w/ the exception of real estate prices) and I'm rarely missing New England or the east coast. Maybe it's the weather, but things (especially people) are so less rude and abrasive, which makes things better all around.

I'll have my busted Lemond back in a few weeks and will be gladly riding the hills, valleys and coast of LA and SoCal in the middle of "winter".

Where are you at? Did you bring a bike? If not, grab one at Sundance Cycles in Agoura Hills and come ride with the group Saturday morning at 7:30. www.sundancecycles.com

Interesting sentiment -- you miss it. I'm originally from Riverside and every single time I've been back in So. Cal I think to myself, "Thank <insert deity of your choice> I don't live here anymore!" Oregon rain or not, I shudder at the thought of living in L.A. rather than this place.

You say many years, but exactly how long have you been away? It's obviously not been long enough and I can only hope that your abbreviated separation from L.A. is the reason for your strange and illogical longing for THAT place

But, I guess if you must be there, you may as well enjoy the sun, cuz you won't find any semblance of it here right now!

I love so-cal (born and raised), but I hate LA. It's dirty, ugly and crowded. But that's just my opinoin. So-cal weather is definitely very nice for riding. It can get a little hot during the summer inland, but I can live with that... beats getting burried in snow in my book.

Oh, don't get me wrong - after 35 years of living here, I'm never coming back. I won't trash L.A. but I lived here long enough, and been through enough crud, to have earned the right.

But today, it's real nice.

Agoura Hills in the AM? Sounds fantastic and I'm here in the Valley - Chatsworth (paging Ovoleg) - but alas, I'm here for a different purpose. I'll be thinking of you.

I just got back from a ride. It is about 65 with no wind. Absolutely perfect biking weather. Tonight we are going to see the Tower with the big number 1 on it.

Well, when all you've got is football....

Actually, my GF is trying to have us look into moving to Austin in a year or so. It's a blue dot in a sea of red.

Yeah, you are so busy that you still have time to almost instantly respond to our posts?
Hey, I work over in West Hills, just off Saticoy and Valley Circle so I'm in the neighborhood if you are in Chatsworth today. Enjoy your stay in Socal.

Steve usually leads the Sat. morning short (30-35 mile) ride so I know him more on sight than AJ. As to the jersey, have you spoken with him about sending one to you? I'm sure they would do that. If you have problems, PM me and I'll try to help you out.

We're trying to figure out a way to humanely deal with all the kkalifornians who've moved into 'keeping it weird'-ville. A feedlot comes to mind.

That's probaly what kkalifornians were saying 30 years ago about everyone moving to their state.

Have you ever heard the term "Don't Californicate Oregon" ?

As a former New Yawker who has lived in SoCal (Los Angeles and now San Diego) for the last 15 years I agree with you 100%. I love it here and don't see me ever living anywhere else. Hawaii would be about the only other place in the US that I would say has a better climate than here.

I'll be riding along the coast in north county SD tomorrow in my shorts and jersey!

BTW-Welcome home Rad! Where in L.A. are you? I get up to Torrance every month or so to visit the In-Laws and I have friends who live in Huntington Beach and Seal Beach.
