Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hate the weather. Hate my trainer

I will ride in the winter cold when the roads are dry and I will ride in rainy/wet conditions during spring, summer and fall.

What I wont do in ride on the wet roads that we've had in upstate NY over the past two weeks. The water on the roads is just too salty and I feel that it will corrode my chain & derailleur in no time.

I just felt like venting. I haven't had a good outdooor ride in a couple weeks.

i can feel your stress brother. As a matter of fact i never got or will get me an indoor trainer, it disgusts me. A cyclist is supposed to be the open-air-scenery lover, or else we should seal ourselves airtight in a steamy gym floor and breathe one anothers' farts..See the positive side of it: being kept away will force you with new passion when the door opens and hopefully you' ll break your records

So I probably shouldn't mention that in Houston today it's about 65 degrees and sunny?

Well, at least the rain should wash away the salt. I actually touch the road with my index finger, then toulch my finger to the tip of my tongue to check for saltiness (yeah I know its stupid).

When the salt is gone, I shall ride again!

I agree with you - I haven't had an outdoor ride since back in early November. Here in NH even on the nice days like today (40-50ºF outside), there's so much sand/salt/crud around that I really don't want to expose any of my bikes to the mess. I've been using my CycleOps Fluid 2 with the Spinervals DVDs, but recently resurrected my rollers and have been riding them to the "Bike-o-Vision" DVDs. For the same amount of riding time, I get a much better workout on the rollers than I do on the trainer - also the scenery is much nicer, and I don't have Coach Troy yelling at me…

FWIW -

Your trainer will help you get the most of what few ride oppotunities you may get. My wife and I train M,T,W in our garage with coach Troy on the Spinervals DVD's, train Th at a staionary session at our LBS coached by the manager/coach of their ladies team, take Fr off for date night, then ride Sat, and Sun. Last weekend was beautiful , almost 80 and clear both days. Can't wait for this weekend. Good luck and be ready for good weather

You could fix up a beater with fenders for the price of a CycleOps trainer.

If the weather makes a significant percentage of your life miserable, then move somewhere with nicer weather. You need to get your priorities straight.

95% of the time the weather is OK. It's only the combination of wetness and salt that makes me leary about going for a ride. Buying a beater is a good idea.

This may be all a mute point since my company is moving me down to North Carolina.

+1 screw the trainers, build a bad weather bike and get out and ride!

It's going to be in the 50s here all week and I have to work.

This weekend it drops into the thirtys with snow.
