I have this happen all the time.......
Although I am serious bicyclist it stops at the actual riding
part. I have boring bikes (by 'kewl' standards)and only own
a helmet and gloves for cycling equipment. No lycra or Discover
Team stuff.
Roadies never wave or acknowledge me. Maybe 1 in 7 (?)
Realisticly, I shouldnt care, but on a human level it bothers my
for some small reason. I dont think there is any 'fraternity'
or whatever between any bikers except maybe fixie riders.

I was traveling west, and in the distance I saw a fellow road-biker. I clicked down a few gears and picked my speed up to a little over 20mph, so I could pass in honor. As I came about even with him, I saw he was riding nice bike, was in great shape, (like a fleshless face...), and was obviously working hard to keep up his pace. He was in the drops, and riding alone. I gave him a from-the-handlebar wave, just a twitch of the fingers. I thinkhe completely ignored me. I'm not sure if his eyes strayed my way, but he definitely did not make any effort to greet me in any way. Just a little twitch if the fingers would have done, but nothing.

I usually wave to fellow roadies or anyone who I make eye contact with. If I'm passing someone I usually say goodmorning or hi and usually get a hello or hi in response. Sometimes I actually meet nice people and talk for a while. It's all good.

When you pass by another car do you raise your hand or roll down the window and yell hi? When you walkl past someone on a busy street do you say hi? Is there some written or assumed policy or cycling rule that says you must recognise someone else?
People are just people whether they are on a bike, walking or on roller blades. I have had this happen to me plenty of times and actually have done this at times myself. The lst time I had just topped a long hill and just didn't have extra energy at the time to lift a finger. Next time you see this biker just say hi.

Either in last months Bicycling magazine or the one before someone had asked the etiquette question on whether or not to wave at another roadie. The response was something along the lines of "don't be the toolbag that you are by waving to other roadies". I disagree with this mentality. I wave to everyone... cagers, roadies, pedestrians, etc... and usually get a wave back. Maybe I'm just a nice guy. Maybe I'm that toolbag the magazine was talking about. Either way it's common courtesy (especially in the south) to wave at someone you either pass in the same direction or in the opposite whether you're in a car, bike, or just walking on the street. Am I the only one?

He was probably pre-formulating his response, but when you kicked it up a notch, he miscalculated the closing trajectory and didn't have time to execute.

I give the finger twitch or head nod to all the cyclists that are coming the other way and get very few returns, if I do it is usually from the older cyclists.
It doesn't bother me, but I think they had to have seen it, otherwise they are not very aware of what is going on around them, which is not very safe.
It seems to be very common for people on motorcycles to wave at others as they pass. It's like being in a special club...

I just the give the "hand up - palm towards you - all five fingers showing" wave for a couple of seconds that anyone would notice. If they still ignore me, I figure that whatever the problem is, it's his or her problem, not mine.
I do this because when I first started riding, I had a really cheap bike and when I saw anyone else riding, I was certain that they were a better rider than I was, with better equipment than I had, and had a wealth of biking knowledge that I did not possess. All of this of course was true, but it wasn't them making me feel inferior, it was me making myself feel inferior.
As time passed, I improved in all of those categorys and whenever I see another rider I try to be as friendly as I can, just in case they are new to cycling and are feeling like an outsider.
(It takes a village to raise a roadie)

What is it about riders on two wheels that have this waving issue? I guess this is sort of off topic, but I see this same type of thread on motorcycle forums that I belong to, it's funny, "Harley riders: Why won't they wave?". 9 out of 10 Harley guys wave when I do (and I wave at every bike I see), I guess they're just used to getting snubbed by "crotch rockets" so they don't bother anymore. People get all bent out of shape when a fellow rider doesn't wave. I always wave at fellow motorcyclists and will simply say hello to fellow cyclists. Both groups are a minority, a happy little group of misfits if you will. So, I give some sort of greeting. If I don't get a reply F 'em, I'll live.

I return all waves and give waves if they live around me...
If I go on any type of bike path where I see dozens of cyclist, none of them get any waves...

There is no written rule that says, "thou shalt wave thine hand to other persons". Of course not. But when I come upon another road biker, which is fairly rare, I like to make some gesture of greeting. we are both out riding in 30-40 f. weather, we are the only people on the trail, YAY, kudos to us! Why not wave?
I'll try verbal acknowledgment nest time.

on a serious note...
Sometimes when I am in a very focused state of mind I really dont notice anything around me except for where I am going. For example when I play drums, When i really get into it I pretty much space into my own world and if someone was laughing I wouldn't notice. In your case it could have been a couple of things. Eithor he didnt even notice you raising a finger. If someone raised a finger or two off his handle bar I would probl just think he was braking. If you really want to get his attention eithor say hello, or give a wave, or sometimes a nod.
Other than thought, don't worry about it. Sometimes when I am on my ride I pass by people and say hello who act like I am not even there, but sometimes I wave to people and end up riding with them for the next 20 or so miles.

It's just you.
Just because you wave or whatever, doesn't mean someone has to totally interrupt their workout and wave back. If you wave, don't expect anything in return. Then that way, you don't feel all hurt and post about it.

I wouldn't get too concerned about someone who doesn't acknowledge you especially if there is a lot of debris on the road or rough surface, or a lot of traffic. etc.the guy just may have been concentrating on things like that or cadence or who knows what? not a big deal. the thing that bothers me are people who have this blank stare and weird facial expression that are almost looking right at you and they just blow off your wave or "hey how ya doing" and say nothing. that's really weird. but to each his/her own I would'nt let it ruin your day.

I don't wave. I just snarl and show my canines... it's more natural that way... and safer too 'cause I can keep my hands on the bars.

Why do these moronic, insecure, girly threads come up all the time? Seriously, you have to wonder if the guy posting this message didn't just call his momma to cry about some stranger not waving back to him, while he was doing his workout.
