Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm glad to say I ordered my first set of Rudys (Rydon)! I got the racing red lenses - does anyone have any experience with these?

I am going to get the Rydons this spring - the only thing I need to figure out is which lens to get.

Anyone familiar with their "ImpactX™ Polarized Photochromic" lens?

Grasschopper,

I bought a pair of Rydons for exactly that reason, Rxable. I love em.
My wife (who hates sunglasses) bought the RB3s since her Rx is pretty
strong (most rudy's only go to +-3.5 diopters, RB3 and a few others go to
+-12 !).
Best investment I've made in a long time, and the Rx was covered by
my vision plan.

So you use that particular lens? Is it good for all light situations?

I don't see anything on sale at Performance, but they are available on eBay/

My cycling team is sponsored by Rudy, so I was able to get a good deal via Rudy's website.

I got the racing red lens and the laser black lens, are there any additional lenses I should consider?

The Racing Red lenses, in particular, are INCREDIBLE. It's not just the color, it's the total formulation. Contact Rudy to get a catalog - read all about them.

I can tell you from experience that they work equally well in sun/cloud/rain/low contrast conditions. I tried them last spring for 2-3 weeks with the Rx inserts, but unfortunately my astigmatism is too great to see well with them. FWIW, I did find the Rydon triangular-section bows uncomfortable on my ears.

Marty...did you go with the separate RX insert with your Rydons? or did you have your prescription made into your tinted lense(s)?
Thanks,
George

I have ridden Rydons for two years and love them. That is a great basic lense, but you may find that you want a clear for low light conditions. I did and am glad that I haven't tried to get by with just the one lense.

I was hoping the racing red would work for low light conditions. I figured Rudy would make an amber tinted lens for low light conditions, but I was surprised when I saw they didn't. Anyone know why?

I have Rydons with the Racing Red lens. The contrast is great and they give decent wind protection.

Racing red is preaty good, I prefer the polarized or racing blue. A friend on my team has the chromatic lenses and he loves them. I am going to get the Rx inserts for my RB3's which I really enjoy.

George,
I went with the insert, that way I can change lenses and only need 1 Rx.
If my Rx changes new lense in insert and I still have lots of lenses.

The Racing Red lenses are the best of all the colours, in my opinion. But you should probably get the ImpactX photochromatic lens in Racing Red. They are more scratch resistant and shatter-proof, and of course the whole one-lens-for-everything is pretty awesome

Thanks Marty.

One of the biggies for me is how high sunglasses fit on my head because I tend to look up through the top of some glasses that sit too low on the bridge of my nose. Oakley M-frames which I ride with are known to be excellent in this regard...they sit high. Can anybody comment on how high the Rydon's sit on the bridge of your nose?

The Rydons (only one I can speak of) has adjustable nose piece so
you can adjust how high they sit on your face.
I'd suggest trying them at LBS or other shop that carries them.

I have a pair of Rudy Ketyums with the "ImpactX Photochromatic Grey" lens (not the Polarized Photochromic ones) and they work great in any kind of light from low to bright sun. I also have a pair of Rydons with the Smoke lens and they're nice to. The Ketyums just fit my face a lot better and are a little more comfortable. I'm really happy with the ImpactX lens though.

I don't like polarized lens on the bike because they tend to take the shine off of wet roads and I had a hard time telling wet from dry in partially wet conditions when I tried them.

Is the Laser Black too dark? Similar to Oakley's Black Iridium?

FYI, you can get extra Rydon lenses at:

https://www.opticsplanet.com

I currently have a set of Rx inserts being made for me at sporteyes.com for $105. Not bad.
