Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Oooh, it has a chainguard. That must be how he hit 100mph downhill. That chainguard is good for at least 10-15mph.

The shop is real. They're not even Giant dealers, but work on this bike. They said it's got about 500 miles on it (hmmm, at 100 mph, that means he's ridden a total of five hours on it!) They said that the guy is a bit, how shall we say, eccentric, and tried to sell the LBS on some pyramid scheme. Whatever.

My question to him:

Hi there. I have a REAL question which I hope will not seem rude like those others, but I understand the value of this bike. I believe that they are Zero XSR-3 wheels, but I wish to verify that they are the hard to find IMA (I think that stands for Iodine Matched Alloy?) Helium Injected Carbon Komposite(tm) rims matched with Inertium Dioxide Interwoven Over Titanium (tm) precision machined bearings. I am only interested in bidding if you can verify that this is the case. Thank you.
his answer, one word:

yes
So it would appear that they are indeed the hard to find IMA HICK IDIOT wheels.

Now I have to bid.

With each of us giving him our $.02, he could do pretty well

I'd have to consider, given the obvious level of confusion this guy displays (ruling out the possibility that he's a) a mischevous 10-year-old or b) having a laugh), the possibility that he may well REALLY THINK HE'S KEEPING THOSE SPEEDS. Let's say he set up his cyclocomputer for the smallest possible wheel size, and is unwittingly reading the results in KpH and misreading as MpH...might get him in the ballpark.

I think the seller is joking...

I asked:

Where is #4 of 50 indicated on the bike?

Could you please post a picture for verification before I bid?
He responded:

What ever it is that you've been smoking, I suggest you take a long break and re-surface to reality.

I called ebay and told them to pull or at least look at the misrepresentation of product in the auction. The rep. I normally talk to at ebay was not there but I would guess they will yank it before the auction ends. There's enough people out there looking at bikes that might beleive the info on his auction page and give this idiot a $1000.00 for the bike.

I bet he has a magnet on every spoke. That would give you some real accurate readings.

And reflectors on the opposite side of the magnets. Now it's complete.

How do you get to a real person? There's a guy scamming with a Colnago C-40 (shows up every few days with a stolen account under a wacky category with a 'contact me at my yahoo' account scam) and I report it every few days (up to about 20 times) and I would love to just call someone directly. Could you share that name and number of an ebay rep?

It appears it has indeed been removed.

I asked him if E.T. could get home on that baby... oh well I guess I will now never know.

Doh, that sucks...I was gonna bid up the auction to $15000 at the last minute just to make him eat the listing fees.

Yeah, rumour has it Lance is thinking of coming out of retirement and wanted to do a private deal for this guy's bike so he used his influence to get it pulled off ebay.

any mathematician here? 70mph on flat road = how many rotation per minute of the pedals? assuming he was really good, doing 52-11 all the time...

I did a quick calculation and it would be around 190 rpm required to maintain 70 mph using 52x11 with 700x23c tires. Take into account that the top sprinters do 70 KMH (kmh x 1.6 =mph) but only for short periods of time.

EDIT: Yeah I got the conversion the wrong way around. MPH x 1.6 =KMH. 70 mph = 112 kmh

Regards, Anthony

* (kmh x 0.62 = mph)
