Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Testicle Discomfort/Soreness

New to riding and my first few rides we 15-10 miles and no pain at all. After I felt comfotable on the bike, I started working on cadence-trying to keep it at 90+. Since then, I have had sore testicles. Not sore like there is a rub, but sore like I got kicked. Any reason you can think of for this? Really sore, even when off the bike. I have about 200 Miles under my belt in the last 3 weeks and I had zero discomfort for the first 100, now it is a different story. Is it that my bibs are too tight?

I have a Terry Mens. Maybe it is starting to break in and is not the right one for me?

or it could be position of the saddle or your position on the bike.
were you fitted by someone?

could be.
it's not a body part I have so...
perhaps you should be refitted or mess with the saddle position a bit.

I'm getting ready to try a Terry Fly Ti Mens saddle. I have heard nothing but great things about it for long term comfort while riding. I'll let y'all know after a few weeks of commuting.

Testicle soreness is not something to mess with. As a doctor I say go and see your doctor. Though it does not sound like torsion (which is a twisting which is an emergency situation) the feeling of being kicked could be something serious. If you like to keep the family jewels in the family, get it checked out.

The seat may not be wide enough to accommadate your sit bones and you are putting pressure on your groin are instead. This is going to sound beautiful but make sure you pull your boys up before you sit down and keep rejusting during the ride as necessary.

the only time I've had nut pain (granted it was MILD, not like a kick at all ) was when the seat was angled too far up in the front.

Personally I'd try readjusting the seat before you go pay to be refit or visit a doctor.

Was your voice a couple of octaves higher?? as this may indicate too tight bibs.
Alternatively, you weren't doing what these guys were??

Actually, I have got similar pain sometimes on longer rides, more like a dull ache, but it gets pretty distracting on centuries etc.

+1 from another doctor on this board. Get your testicles examined, and have them teach you how to do a testicular self-exam.

Some other cyclist learned that the hard way... What was his name? Lance something?

Try a specialized Alias, or Avatar.... A specialized shop will measure your sit bones, and help you pick as saddle that matches your swat bone width (they come in 3 sizes). I have an Alias, and have found it to be one of the most comfortavle saddles I have ridden.

The saddle could be angled wrong, or your saddle could be too soft, and the padding is pushing up into your Epididymis, either cutting off the circulation to the testes, or causing general trauma to the tubing. Your bars could be too low, your saddle could be too high. The main thing is that your sit bones should be supporting pretty much all your weight. While you are riding, you should not be able to feel the soft tissue in front of your sit bones, bearing any of your weight. 99 percent of the time, sore testicles is caused by trauma to the Epididymis, which is the tubing that runs between your butthole(or prostate) to your nuts. Don't think you can tough out the pain, it's not that sort of thing. Get a good saddle, get it fit right, raise the bars, move the saddle forward, lower the saddle, get a bike with a shorter top tube, whatever you need to do to get your weight on the sit bones. You don't want to mess with a bout of Epididymitis, believe me.

You should get checked. Also, a very small adjustment pointing the nose down ever so slightly can make a huge difference on comfort.

I doubt it.

I'm going to suggest something that's obvious, but maybe not to a new rider. Make sure that your boys are lifted and held high and out of the way of the saddle. That's one of the benefits of bibs: lots of lift. Placement of the tender parts is the last thing I check when heading out the door to ride.

No body parts should come in contact with the saddle, except for your sit bones and perineum. And sparingly on the perineum.

For what it's worth, I have a Terry Men's Ti Fly, and I not a huge fan. The saddle seems to require a lot of adjustment to get the right fit, and while I no longer have any complaints, I don't find it particularly comfortable for me - I suspect that it is not a good fit with my sit bones, and suffered 'roids until I bought a seatpost that facilitiated pitch adjustment.

As for nut pain, I've been fortunate in that department, despite a minor hernia down there that can produce a kick-like pain from time to time. Go to your doctor to rule out anything not bike related, then go to you bike shop to make sure your seat position fits you properly - while wearing your bibs.

Here's hoping it's only the fault of the bike!

A.

I get this when the wife is in a foul mood. It has nothing to do with the saddle, you need to go chase some...

Could be a simple case of good-ol-fashioned blueballs. There are lots of fairly simple home remedies for this; you might simply need to get a little more creative with the chamois butt'r *before* your ride.
