Bikes: Lynskey Helix OS and R330, Parlee Z1, Anderson 953 Custom





Apart from the Lynskey logo, everything else is etched onto bright-brushed.

The color scheme was titanium-silver, black-matte, and red highlights to complement SRAM Red.

Am about to find some acetone to erase the "Lightweight" logos on the stem spacers.

Funny, I just turned 42 a couple weeks back, and finally got all my parts for my build - a Lynskey R230 w/ Dura Ace 7800. I'm waiting for a quiet rainy afternoon to start putting her together. I really enjoy brand new builds.

I did my second ride on my recently assembled Helix OS today - it is the start of the monsoon season here in Thailand.

I rode my standard exercise loop. I started slow and averaged 20 mph for 35 miles over 1.6 hours. Still in the "getting to know you" phase.

The bike is sweet - the Lynskey Helix OS frame is awesome. I opened up the geometry of the bike a bit with 25mm of headset spacers and also 25mm of seat set back. The bike still feels very tight. The Helix OS is advertised as having a stiff frame but I think that stiff is not a good enough description. The bike is stiff but not harsh - I would describe the bike as sharp and tight. The minor, high frequency road buzz is absorbed but I can still feel the bumps and turns in the pavement. The sharper edges of the bumps are rounded off so there is no jarring. And, the bike is super responsive - when I had to sprint off the saddle to pass, the bike just took the watts and accelerated. I think that this is both the Helix and the OS of the bike shining through.

With the Fizik Cyrano carbon seatpost, the Aliante braided saddle rails, the ENVE carbon fork, stem, and handle bar, and the wide rimmed HED wheels that open up the 23mm Continental TT tires to 25.4mm, the bike seem to have both a very responsive and absorbent-feeling character - not just any titanium, not just Lynskey titanium, but Lynskey Helix OS titanium!.

The 2012 Sram Red and Cannondale Hollowgram SISL cranks are great and would be a work in progress until everything stretches out amd settles in. On the stand, all the shifting was perfect. On the road, I expected that the drivetrain would need to be tweaked. The front YAW shifting was without hesitation between the FD and the Cannondale Hollowgram SISL crank. The rear Aeroglide shifting was quick both up and down the 11-23 X-Dome cassette - I am still getting use to the quickness of the double-tap ErgoDynamic shifters and would sometimes inadvertantly shift two gears - especially up the larger cogs. The shifting is still not yet spot on and there is still some chain rub in the large chain ring to larger cogs combinations. I do not want to adjust anything too much yet since I will like to let the chain stretch out a bit, after about 20 hours of riding. But, on the chainring rings and cogs that are currently perfect, it is just so quiet and instantaneous.

Lastly, I just want to mention the Aerolink brakes are great - great modulation and feel - both feathering and hard stopping. My original choice were eeBrakes but I could not get them in time. Just as well because the SRAM Red Aerolink brakes are half the price, only 50 grams heavier, and work really well, even with wider rimmed wheels like HED or Zipp Firecrest.

Btw, the new ErgoDynamic hoods feel great but everybody else's ergonomics might be different. I ride primarily on the hoods but try to go down to the drops as much as I stay on top of the bars. I have found that the 3/4-point between the hoods and the bars is also nice.

I also have the 2012 SRAM Red Exogram crank in a box but I really like the look of the Cannondale Hollowgram SISL - am I being superficial?

'98 GT Edge Titanium. Built in the Longmont, CO shop and owned for most of its life by a GT employee who went on to other bike-ish employment when GT crashed, but maintained it as his primary ride.
I built the frame up as you see it now.
D-A 7700, Fizik test saddle, SR Raid Champions, Sugino compact, Pro3's. Deda Quad4 stem with the logos polished off, Shimano aero seatpost. Sweet ride.

Thanks for letting this thread float back up to the top.
I've been watching Ti bikes since the early Teladyne and have wanted one on and off since then....mostly off, because I've never had one. For the most part, this has been due to cost and scarcity of used frames. Lately it's been due to all the sexy CF bikes turning my head.
The problem with CFs is that they are expensive, and buying a used one is iffy. I worked in racing kayak and sailboat repair so I know most of the ugly issues that can plague CF lay ups, especially if they are built with an emphasis on light weight.
While Ti bikes have their own issues, buying a used one is much less iffy. I think I'll make a Ti frame my reward for breaking 5 hours for a century.
