51.7 mph (83.2 km/h) on a short but steep (18%) downhill. I repeatedly hit between 49.5 and 51.7 every time. One of these days I'm going to put a little effort in and try to hit 52+.
53.0 mph on my rollers one night messing around. According to the online calc. my legs were spinning 148rpm. Of course I only went that speed for a fraction of a second and almost crashed wildly but it was fun.

47mph going down Grant Mt. on the Western side. Scared the pants off me so I slowed down; could've gone faster. Road was curvy and had no shoulder at all.
Got passed by ~15 Harleys going down a hill on Cathedral Cavern hwy. while doing 45mph. Road was straight so I was giving it all I had.
I regularly hit 40mph pedalling down Monte Sano where Tollgate Rd. meets Bankhead.
On the flat I've cranked it up to almost 30mph but I couldn't hold that very long. Let's face it, I'm slow.

my top speed is 37.0 mph on a downhill, but that's on a fixed gear road bike. My 74.2 gear inches means I was spinning at 167rpm. This was only a two-block-long hill, but it drops an insane amount of altitude for the distance. When I got to the bottom and slowed down (after barreling past a confused cabbie and thankfully clearing two green lights), I had a side cramp like I used to get back in high school running the mile for phy ed.

My computer had me going 76 mph up a steep hill. I was shocked! I had no idea I was the world's fastest man. Especially weighing 250.

Fastest Bicycle Speed (www.guinnessworldrecords.com)
The highest speed ever achieved on a bicycle is 268.831 km/h (167.043 mph), by Fred Rompelberg (The Netherlands) at Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah, USA, on October 3, 1995. His record attempt was greatly assisted by the slipstream from his lead vehicle. Fred has been cycling professionally for nearly 30 years and during that time has held 11 world records.
Don't ask me how! Don't think there is much of a grade on the Salt Flats??

I've turned by bike upside down and, in the highest gear, I handcranked the pedals up to 79mph. Real cycling...43.5 mph verified with computer. I can hit 32 mph for a second or two on the flats...but only when I'm pissed and chasing down a driver that has almost killed me. There is one hill I used to do that is scary fast. I haven't ridden it since I started using a computer, but I must have been going over 50 mph..will definately try again if the potholes ever get filled.

I've hit just under 63 a couple of times on my bike, on our shop ride on Sunday's we do a 52 plus descent. Speed on land doesn't scare me but on water, that's scary. My cousin had a drag boat that was capable of hitting 120mph+. He took me out on that thing once, we hit 90 and I screamed for him to shut it down. I raced open wheel race cars for nearly 25 years and gone wheel to wheel at 150 but that boat scared the crap out of me!

Ride it like you stole it
72 mph downhill.
about 42 mph on a flat section being paced by two cat 2's on a tandem during a century and twenty other single riders. I couldn't hang on for very long.

i must be a big chicken then. i patted myself on the back for going 43 down a hill once. even then, that was white knuckled. fastest on flat was 35 or so. i regulary ride in the high 20's in city traffic and find that less scary then a 40 mph country descent.....
