Help Changing Zipp/Shimano to Campy
Hey gang,
I posted this over in the mechanics section without much luck as of yet. Assuming the moderators do not mind, I am trying on this forum as a good deal of us here do our own mechanical work.
I will be "inheriting" a set of Zipp 303 clinchers from a friend of mine who is upgrading to another wheelset. These are 2005 model wheels currently with a Shimano DA cassette. What I would like to do is change the rear Zipp freehub to Campy, change the cassette to a Campy Record 11-23, and use the wheels on my current bike. I think I understand how to do this, but would appreciate any advice on making the change.
Here is my current understanding: once I have the rear wheel, I understand that I have to remove the current cassette and then the free hub body. To do the fomer, I need a removal tool and wrench, and I am planning on getting a Park Tool FR-1 Freewheel Remover along with a FRW-1 Freewheel Remover Wrench. Assuming this is correct and I actually pull this off, I am not sure how to then exchange the Zipp freehub body from their Shimano version to the Campy one. I know they are switchable, but I just do not know how this is done. I have order the Campy version of the Zipp freehub body directly from Zipp but am waiting it to arrive in the mail. Finally, assuming that I am able to replace the freehub body with the Zipp/Campy model, I then need to install the Campy cassette. I currently have a Record 11-23 with a lockring available. To install this, I assume that I will need another Freewheel Remover tool, this one a Park Tool BBT-5 to make the install. However, I am not sure if this is the correct device for this purpose.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks very much as usual!

to remove the cassette, you actually want the FR5 (the FR-1 is intended for freewheel removal, not removing a cassette lock ring) a chain whip, and a big ole crescent wrench (you don't need the deicated frewheel removal wrench if you've got a big crescent wrench.
If you haven't changed out a cassette, switching out the free hub from shimano to campy, might be above your paygrade (I know it's above mine) I'd suggest LBS, or contact Zipp.

I think you might have this wrong. First off you need FR-5 and a chain whip (if buying Park: HCW-16, SR-1 and SR-2 will all work) to remove the old cassette and a wrench (I use a pipe wrench but you could get Park FRW-1). You have BBT-5 correct for installation of the new Campy lockring and you would also use that FRW-1 you got as well.
Now in between there you need to swap the freehub bodies. Use the Zipp directions found here (I believe you have the 202 hub): https://www.zipp.com/support/maintena..._202_rear_hub/ You will need a 5mm allen key. Then you should also need to redish your wheel...if you don't know how to true a wheel just have your LBS do this. It is only about a 5-10 min job.

Wouldn't it be easier to just use a jtek shiftmate and keep the shimano cassette, or am I missing a point somewhere?

aren't there conversion cassets like wheels MFG that do the trick and cost around the same as record/da? I would think that would be the easiest and most cost effective.
