Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

This thread is ridiculous. I doubt you even know if these women are triatheletes. And even if they are that doesn't mean cycling is their strength. I beat some guys on hills, and some guys beat me. Just as I'm sure you beat some guys up a hill, and some guys beat you (talking to a man). I think that the OP posted this to somehow make himself feel better about himself.

I did a citizen's race last season that I would not consider hilly, more rolling. I was with a group of guys and I beat every one of them to the top of every hill. In the middle of the race some guy came up beside me on one of the downhill and said "Good climbing. Don't burn yourself out". Why would I burn myself out? Because I could climb better than him? I don't like it when some guy I don't know and have never ridden with before, make comments about my ability.

It's absolutely ridiculous what a guy will tell himself so that he doesn't think he's being beaten by a girl. I've never seen so much insecurity in my life.

The most true thing I've seen in this thread. Sorry, this is what happens when too much testosterone gets into one place on the internet. You should see what happens in automotive drag racing forums.

Yes this whole discussion is absurd. On two seperate rides this weekend with seasoned riders and veteran racers, women were consistantly at or near the front on the flats, on the climbs (many and brutal), and on the descents (just as many and hair raising). And this is not a crowd of riders that would follow someone for the view. I suggest that you quit hanging out in the park and get out on the road and find some people to ride with that challenge your abillities consistantly.

And another thing

The OP's "theory" is that women are lighter than him so they should be better climbers. They are lighter because they are shorter. I'm sure someone has pointed out a billion times that its a power to weight ratio for climbing skills and also the ability to suffer. I know your trying to say "Well their lighter than me so they should be faster...." Blah, Blah. Some women aren't out there to hammer, just like some guys aren't out there to hammer. Maybe next time you should tell them it's a race before you compare yourself with them.

So you really are just trying to boost your ego somehow with this thread.

Generalizations can get you in trouble.

But, I would have to say that most of the female cyclists I know can climb well. Not as well as the best male racing cyclists, but better than a lot of the "B" century-tourist males. Most (but not all) of these women are short and light - under 5'4" and 120 lbs (excepting one gal who is 5'9" about 135). Where they seem to have problems is when the boyz light it up on the flats and rolling terrain. The women can't hold the pace at the front of the pace line so, if we have a girl or two who sticks to the front group, it is generally requested (oh so tactfully) that they chill out in the back and enjoy the draft - as we also do with any guys who are in a little over their head. The pace line is just faster and safer if the speed is more consistent and tired folks can rest up and maybe help out once they recovered. Most gals are grateful not to get dropped and will happily come along for the ride.

I run into lots of women that think any resistance at all will instantly transform them into the Incredible Hulk. I assure them that it's not that easy.

My wife has the opposite problem. She's been trying to muscle her way up climbs in a 42x whatever, and I've been pleading with her to use her granny, even if she has to upshift in the back. On the last two rides she actually tried it, and her speed was much improved. She's a natural spinner!

Funny thing, I got my GF some shorter shorts for her B-day a couple weeks ago and she's discovered that it was her shorts that made her thighs look fat (to her...she's all of maybe 100lbs soaking wet). Now maybe I can get her to stop overspinning and find that happy medium between power and rpms.

Hah! I like the shorty shorts on my wife. They look hot! They were an easy sell because I told her that the tan line would be higher, so when she wears skirts, the tan line won't show.

It's true!

On the paceline/flats thing; I do a lot of pulling because I'm slow on the climbs @210# and I like to contribute when I can, but there is 1 woman who is so strong everywhere that when she gets to the front of the line the speed goes up. If it's late in a hard ride she can drop a lot of us on the flats, and she's pretty small, too. She's about my age and I think I love her.

good post, sarah!

i get that too.... "oh she's lighter.. she should be faster"... well guess what?!? i'm not in a competition.... i don't have the same power to weight.... plus... I"M OUT THERE TO HAVE FUN (and burn calories so i can eat more food)....

i'm NOT a racer... don't want to be a racer.... no desire whatsoever.... i do my own thing at my own pace... i have endurance... not speed..... there are LOTS of men AND women that pass me on the road! so go ahead and talk about beating me up a hill... or going faster than me on the flats.... cuz they have more strength than i do! so they CAN go faster..... there are even a rare few that will pass me on the flats... that i can turn around and beat on the hills... although not too many! lol!

again.... i'm not in a competition with ANYONE but MYSELF! if they decide to race me... to set up a competition... it's all in THEIR own mind!

i'm an all-around fitness person... i don't concentrate JUST on riding... if hubby had his way... i'd concentrate strictly on cycling... but i LOVE doing aerobics... kickboxing.. and lifting weights... i guess i could stop doing all that.. and concentrate just on cycling.. buy why? i enjoy it all! so i give what i want to each particular sport....

I think we can put this thread to bed with a simple quote from a simple gal:
"That's hot"

That was such an impressive event in retrospect having since ridden in a couple of other centuries, especially the way the community got behind it with the high school bands, mechanics at every SAG stop, big choice of snacks, sandwiches, drinks, massage table at the end, not to mention the 9000 rider's that showed up. The 90 degree weather in Feb was a huge bonus.

The only negative part was some bad asphalt in the outskirts, but what the heck, that city gets pounded by 115+ degrees heat every summer...

Palm Springs definitely outshone Solvang for this year at least...
