Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

At the Annual PIne Flat hill climb (2700 feeet in 11 miles) in cold rain and high wind The best time was 50 minutes and change, the worst 1:16. I would have taken 3 hours but was running the finish line. The one lady did it in 1:05. Middle of the pack. I hear that gearing bit, on a recent ride one lady would pass me on the 5% slopes and I'd pass her on the 10% to 12% grades. Later, on the flats, she disappeared. I had touring gears and she nearly had a corncob.

A woman roadie left me in the dust and my own hyper-extended hell today. Yes, there are always exceptions.

It takes a lot of miles (or years) to develop the leg power and technique to climb well.
Rubbish;

1. Bodyweight is more important than power output
2. THERE IS NO TECHNIQUE TO CLIMBING

We had an 80 mile almost century this morning in Vegas (Tour of Summerlin) and while riding with the one of the men's Master's (45+) teams in front, I noticed that these fit triathalon-type women go pretty fast on the flats, but as soon as we hit a drag or a sustained 5-6% climb, it's like they hit a wall.

It kind of amazes me because these girls are in shape, maybe 120-130 lbs, yet they look like 250 lb. males Clydes when they hit a big drag.

Kind of confused on this because in my mind, I kind of assume that every who is that light is automatically a strong climber.

$0.02
Yep, there's some truth to this. But only some. There are some killer women climbers out there. When you run into them you'll know. They'll be dumping you like the Tuesday trash on the first hill : ). I rode with a couple once. They were PROS. I'm a former Vets racer who never upgraded past Cat IV. And I've been dropped by women on competive rides ONCE in 20 years. So it goes.

So men are generally faster than women on bicycles. But not always.

Roadies CAN get laid. But they have to stop riding their bikes for a while. The ratio of men to women in cycling is about 2000 to 1. If you hadn't noticed.

I may look like a dork in my bike weenie getup but once I put on street clothes I'm a lot fitter looking than most of the other guys my age. The ones with the beer bellies.

Maybe you should stop ridding over those speed bumps and find some real hills to climb.

I think the problem in this thread is the nation of the poster... Cycling is really not that popular in the states yet so making a statement like women can't climb is like polling 5 people on whether they like Bush or not; you might actually get 100% approval-which proves nothing because your polling base is too small. Go to Italy or France and I bet you'll find some women climbers.

We're trying to add some entertainment to the intermission in some of our track races, so one of the new riders had a Tango demonstration. Tango has the opposite ratio problem, and apparently involves a bit of groping, so she was trying to get some cyclists interested.

And the OP is riding with the wrong women or something, or doesn't see the women who can climb because they're way in front of him. I know plenty who can climb with the best of them (but this is SoCal).

Oh god, the giving birth brag. Yes guys can give birth. To kidney stones. I can't imagine a child being any worse than that. And if that's not painful enough, try some chemotherapy on for size, that's not just for the girlies, either.

Not true, genius.

Climbing speed (neglecting aero and frictional effects) is proportional to the power-to-weight ratio. First discovered by Isaac Newton (who was one of the top 1000 physicists in the UK).

I agree. I'm a women that's lighter then most men and I get smoked all the time. Its all in the legs, power.

Its motivating to see amazing women cyclists that change the generalizations, they are the ones that make me bike!

Is this riding up the same 5' "hill" 740 times? (just kidding).

I have to ask - are you *from* Florida? People here in Michigan drive two or three hours to go to a 'mountain' to ski that has a smaller elevation drop than the minor hill my parents live on in Western PA.

I not trying to insult you or anything - there's definitely no hills here in Michigan, either; but I think the highest elevation in Florida is about 350 or so feet above sea level. What's the max delta elevation in one climb on that ride?

I had heard that she lives on this tough hill so anytime she bikes she has to finish up on this hill. Just this past winter for the first time I went to a party at this friend's house and I finally got to experience this hill . . . in a car! Now I know why she's such a strong climber. F'ggetaboudit!!! I would move!!

Also, if these were women who looked like they do tris, maybe they were using their tri bikes which are usually higher geared and therefore not suitable for climbing hills. I had this experience on a recent charity ride, on the flats I was passed by this extremely fit looking woman who made me look like I was pedalling backwards, but as soon as we hit a hill I sailed past her like she was pedalling backwards Her bike had a corn-cob cluster, mine has gearing that can practically climb trees - I'm sure if her gearing had been slightly different, she would have powered up the hills and become a dot in the distance.

We watched a road race on local television recently ... all the women competing were world class cyclists and there was one section in the race where the bulk of them got off their bikes and WALKED up the hill - only a handful actually managed to cycle up the hill and they were barely faster than the people walking. Obviously, this was a function of gearing but put a male cyclist of the same weight and fitness on a similarly geared bike, and he would have had no problem with that hill.
Let me clarify that these women dressed in tri-apparel and shoes (one strap) were all using traditional road bikes.

Sounds like Michigan or Florida should be the next vacation destination for me. I can't get away from hills around here, and sometimes I just get sick of em.

I'd have to leave the GF, though; she loves to climb; gets on my damn nerve!
