Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

From what I've read, the same kind of things as mtb...padded gloves protect the hands and keep vibrations from affecting you as much.

They also keep your hands warm. I wear full-finger gloves most of the year, because my hands get cold. The padding is also helpful against carpal tunnel syndrome.

It relieves some of the pressure, mainly when riding on the hoods for me. It also keeps the sweat from making your hands slippery, but with modern bar tape, it's usually not a problem anyway. Some people like them, some don't, and the rest just wear them because it's part of the garb.

being able to use your hands after you take a nasty fall....

I learned from experience... having your hand wrapped up for a week because it is pussing all over the place is not cool.

WEAR GLOVES!!!

Comfort mainly. Also protect your palms if you crash. Many have terry sweat/snot wipers on back. Plus you get that cool half tanned finger look that chicks love.

Bikes: More than I need, really.

One of the most common injuries in a crash - in addition to the road rash on the thigh - is gravel in the palm.

Another thing about gloves is you can use them to clean off debris from your wheel while you are riding...say if you happened to run through some stuff that sticks to your tire.

What gloves have sweat wipes or snot wipes on them? I need to buy a pair, it will keep me from blowing snot rockets out every 5 minutes.

So then you can get your gloves dirty for no reason. Seriously, tire wiping does absolutely nothing.

Crash protection for your palms!! I can't imagine not riding without my gloves for this very reason.

uh, if wiping debris off of your tire immediatly before it can puncture your tube does "absolutly nothing" I'm going to keep doing "absolutly nothing" to prevent flats. I regularly ride rear tires down to the threads w/ this technique w/ v. few flats. Right now my rear tire has 1200 miles on it and it's totally square & getting down to the threads - literally zero rubber left on the bottom of the tire in a couple o' spots. I've seen gloveless riders flat after riding through intersections where glass shards were present - & I didn't - thans to me doing "absolutly nothing"

I have cannondale and pearl izumi gloves with terry backs that are supposed to be for wiping off sweat and other substances.https://www.nashbar.com/profile.cfm?c...eid=&pagename=
or
https://www.nashbar.com/profile.cfm?c...eid=&pagename=
both mention terry wipes on back. I wear PI white line gloves, not sure of what the cannondale model is, but go to any LBS and you should find tons of gloves with wipes on the backs.

Nashbar brand. Remember left hand for snot, right for sweat. It is not a good thing to forget.

Without gloves, my hands go numb after about 3 miles. With them, i can extend that to about 8 miles before i have to change my hand position.

Gloves are good for protecting your hands from vibration, sun & road rash if you crash. Most have terry thumbs for wiping sweat or snot. I'd also argue that the sweat and oil from you hands will break down bar tape alot faster if you're not wearing gloves. I've seen plenty of people ride without gloves, but I wouldn't.

Ive had about 4 slides that have scuffed my gloves. On one occasion about 1mm thickness of leather was abraded from the palms. Every time I was able to get back on the bike and continue my ride as if nothing had happened.
Without gloves I would have wrecked my hands, required hospital treatment and been off work or tour for a few weeks.

The number 1 reason I wear gloves is for grip on the handlebars mindyou I do have sweaty hands when I ride. On long rides you can get a suprising amount of abrasion from the handlebars so gloves protect you from blisters and of course crash protection is potential, yet hopefuly not needed benefit.

Regards, Anthony

A good glove will help prevent nerve compression too.

You need gloves because you wont be considered a serious cyclist until you have the cyclists tan that streches from your wrists to your mid-bicep.

I like the grip enhancement and snot-wiping abilities of gloves. I like the slight vibration-absorption of gloves. And after a recent nasty crash which produced mucho road rash on my leg and arm, I was glad that my glove took most of the hit so that at least one part of my body was not scabby for weeks on end.
