Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

There's a big difference between THE yellow jersey and A yellow jersey. If you want to limit yourself that much, though, fine by me.

If you're after plain jerseys you can get them fairly inexpensively from places like Nashbar, MEC, and REI.

I am, at this moment, sitting in a plain yellow jersey, which I got from Nashbar, contemplating going out for a ride. In the room next to me are a plain green jersey, plain red jersey, several plain black jerseys, plain blue jersey, plain purple jersey .... well, you get the idea.

BTW - I'd probably wear that tuxedo jersey. It would be one of the most formal things in my closet!!

In my long and wicked life I have seen one and one only man who looked good in that formal Tux print jersey. He and his bride (who wore a veil and carried a boquet) were hard-core UMCA ultra riders doing a last century ride as singles before their wedding that afternoon. I was invited to the ride and reception and stayed with them for the first 50 miles then doubled back to the reception. I had met the bride once in a howling windstorm very late at night in Death Valley. She had said she had been in the Furnace Creek 508 and my wife asked her what her animal name was. "MINK" "Mink McNeil, I presume" I replied. I was the UMCA stats keeper at the time and recognised the name. We had corresponded for years and had never met before. Seemed appropriate to meet under those conditions. I've no idea if she took the grooms' name. Whatever it was.

Especially for cycling, I like interesting and humourous designs. For me, the tux-jersey falls into that category. People go all ga-ga over the most uninspired team-jerseys. I don't get it. If you're going to pay a little extra to wear something other than a plain homogenously coloured jersey then you might as well get something that shows someone has put a little thought into making it interesting rather than trying to randomly fill every square inch with a logo.

I've said it before... I want a Futurama jersey... with this printed on the front...

And this on back....

Or maybe the caption should be printed on the matching shorts.

And let's not forget the green, and the white with red polka dots, not to mention that other tours use colors other than yellow. We'd have to ride naked!

I wear one of these on group & charity rides:

When the inevitable Serious Cyclist makes a comment, I put on an overdone Yakov Smirnov accent and say:

In Soviet Russia, bicycle rides you!

Mind you I am not so foolish as to wear that on solo rides out in rural Texas...

I agree with the sentiments so far that people need to lighten the heck up. Fun jerseys are fair game. The only thing I dislike seeing is people wearing champion jerseys (of any kind) that they have not earned.

CCCP jersey, I'd probably do.

Confederate flag jersey, maybe. I'm a Texan after all.

But I'd kick anyone wearing a swastika jersey where then sun don't shine.
