Like cantdrv55, I live in a city with a large and prominent gay population and some of them DO dress and behave in a manner which makes them identifiably gay. I always assumed this was because they wanted you to know their sexuality, and they were quite comfortable with who they are - something which a gay person living Flyspeck, USA might not want to do.
Of course you are not going to be able to pick out every gay person in a 20-mile radius just by eyeballing them, but those that make it obvious are pretty easy to pick - and what is obvious to someone who lives in a city with a large gay population may not seem so to someone who doesn't.

One thing that I think holds many women back is a pervasive fear of being looked at, desired, or judged by people whose opinions really don't matter. Although this happens less with guys, it's hardly unheard of. At a decent percentage of health clubs, it's not unusual for guys to show interest in people they like even if the person of interest is literally wearing nothing and is straight.
Some guys go into a tizzy if another dude looks at or hits on them, but frankly I don't see what the big deal is.
