When I used to run (when I had better knees) I noticed this as well. I'd be on the MUP; say 'Hello' to the ~45 year old women, and they'd smile, and say 'Hello' back. Younger women... absolutely nothing. It got to the point where I wouldn't say anything to the 18-30 Female demographic.

That's because the 18-30 female demographic grew up during the birth of the political correctness age, and have a well-honed ability to be a Professional Victim. Sometimes I think the most reasonably-minded people I talk to are men and women over the age of 70.

Of course, men around that age won't talk to me either. I think they're afraid to look gay by talking to a guy in lycra. So pretty much the only people I can get to say 'hi' to me when I ride are middle-aged people on their lawns. And little kids. Kids love me.

I think that you're onto something. Luckily I have the super-human ability to get over myself for the second that it takes to throw out a cordial greeting to a fellow cyclist. Oh, and my kids would say "hi" to you too. My six year old likes to play "spot the road cyclist" while we're driving. She's always shouting "look mom...there's another one!"

On one of my worst riding days ever, I was at the end of a hilly 40-mile that I swear was 100% into a 20mph headwind, and was really slugging along. I passed through this neighboorhood that I like because everyone is friendly. These two kids that are always playing in the street were out there, and the little boy started running next to me (told you I was dying) and saying "faster, faster!"

I might've punched him if he'd been a little older

Just treat everybody with the same courtesy and respect you expect to be directed towards you.

The OP's post was rather juvenile; he may have done it for some laughs but it's tone may well be a reason why there aren't more female riders. It is the reason there so many women's only gyms and workout classes; who wants to feel like they're in a peep show?

PC is an interesting phenomenon. Though well intentioned, I think many of the proponents miss the real point. "Diversity" in the US seems to mean tolerance of different color skin, foreign languages, different food, and unfamiliar customs.

However, that's all superficial stuff. The real differences between different cultures are in the norms that define what people do and how they relate to each other. What is appropriate, right, and wrong is largely a matter of perspective so anyone who examines what others do/say/whatever through his or her own cultural lens will likely conclude that others need to adjust their behavior.

But I am off topic. What happened to those pictures of baboons anyway?

That could be part of the reason, but I don't think that's it. I've heard that half of the NASCAR fans are women even though the sport has very few women drivers and the culture definitely favors bonehead males

But then again, it's a bunch of guys going around in circles and everyone talks about how they feel all the time -- just like figure skating which is a chick sport if there ever was one. BTW, before all the racing and figure skating fans crucify me, I have followed NASCAR for 30 years and skate myself (just picked up some specially ordered skates last Saturday).

I'm inclined once again to agree with banerjek. A post in an internet forum, even one that happens to be about cycling, is very unlikely to deter more females (even hot ones) from becoming cyclists. The labels exist beyond BF, and people use them all the time. It's not like people are going to get into cycling and suddenly realize omigodthesepervertslookatgirlsonbikesandcallthemhotroadies. I'm not defending the use of these labels or saying it's a Good Thing; the point is I think there are a lot of other reasons people (male and female) decide to choose cycling (or not); reasons that come way before "I might be looked at or called 'eye candy'".

It just doesn't make sense to me. OK, so you'll say "of course it can't make sense to you because you're not female", but as a parallel, I knew before I got into cycling that a lot of non-cyclists view male cyclists as being "gay" for whatever reasons and the clothing styles are not my cup of tea, but those considerations were not even on the list when I decided to get into it.

As to the "everyone's different" tack, of course! That is what makes these discussions interesting (or infuriating, if you don't agree). I don't think anyone expects to actually "win" here. It's one of those things that can go on for, oh, 16 pages and still go right back to the beginning with no resolution
