I tried this.
You will become sleepy, irritable, and hungry all of the time.
After about 2 days I had to stop due to severe stomach cramps and constant headaches. I ended the diet by eating well over 5 lbs of food. I couldn't stop once I started.

I'm doing Weight Watchers and ride between 650 and 1,000 mi/month. (I have two small kids, a wife and a 105 year old house. The bike sometimes has to sit idle.)
I started at 360 pounds this past winter and am down to 285ish. I lost three pant sizes. It isn't easy but it isn't too hard. I still drink every once in a while and I still eat enough food. (But I was never a big junk food guy. I got fat on good food not fast food.)
I'm not the first one up the hill but I've never quit, either.
I'm looking forward to my next century and I am already planning a ride from NY to RI for the fall.

Count the calories, both in and burned. Include everything eaten, which will force you to be aware. Include everything burned, like sleep and walking.
Now, eat smaller meals, pay attention to serving size. Pick healthy snacks you like and eat them between meals, so you are eating 5 times a day. Make sure that you are at a calorie defecit of no more than 1000 calories per day, that's all you can ask your body to safely convert from fat. Use the riding to help you achieve the correct calorie counts. You need rest days too.
750 calorie defecit a day = 1.5 lbs lost in a week. That's what most doctors recommend, although if you are truly large you can go a little more. 1000 a day is 2 lbs. a week, which isn't bad in my opinion.
Yes, it's working for me. I was about 204 first of June, about 196 now, and I do not feel like I'm missing out. I'm just counting and tracking those calories.

Uh.. I'm not sure that anyone noticed the part where this post was supposed to be humorous. At least, I hope it was. 1200 calories a day shouldn't make you into a monster in 2 days.

I'm taking in roughly 3800 calories a day and I'm still losing weight.

IF you do not get enough calories your body will begin to break down your muscles and use that to gain the energy you need. This will make you weak and unhealthly. Better Idea would be to pay attention more to what you eat. But Limiting your Calories to that degree will do more harm than good.

I burned an extra 10000 calories from cycling last week and didn't lose a pound (and wasn't trying to, btw). Which means, of course, that unless you're keeping track of how much you burn and how much you eat it's hard to diet sensibly.
I would recommend no more than a 1000 calorie per day deficit, preferrably only 500 (i.e. 1 pound per week). It's way better for you in the long run to lose weight slowly.

Whoa! I thought my 2000 calories per day was tough. 1200 cal/day is murderaaaah! I couldn't hack that at all. I say keep it around 1800 cal/day and continue riding/working out and on the hard days 2000-2500 cals isn't a bad thing. You need more calories to fuel the engine.

I hear you. I have legal access to amphetamines, but it's prob not a good idea, esp in the heat.
EDIT: oh yeah, recently tried some diet pills my ex-fiance got from some back-alley diet doctor.... don't do that....

I did 1500 miles last month. In the first half of the month I dropped 2 lbs, in the second half I gained 3.

Nothing will get those miles in like running away from a 20 foot tall purple three toed sloth that constantly talks Arabic.
Do it says I.

Didn't one of the pros die in TdF years ago from amphetamine dosing - I believe he had a cardiac arrest during a long climb in the heat.

Right now, my diet is decent. I haven't been moderating the calories very long, though, so I'll have to give it some time. Given the mileage I was riding, I (naively) figured I could just eat what I want.
I'm currently riding 5 days/week, totalling anywhere from 17 - 23 hours/week. Everyone says I'm doing too much. One thing I haven't figured out yet is whether it's better to do more shorter rides, fewer longer rides or mix it up.
